May 23rd, 2014

As our winter is fast approaching the best horses are heading north to Doomben for some quality graded stakes racing. Let’s take a look at the fields and see what we can find to get ourselves enjoying Lobster by the end of the day to kick of Memorial weekend.

DOOMBEN – AUS A

RACE 4 – GRADE 3 PROGRAMMED PROPERTY SERVICES LORD MAYOR'S CUP 1615m of $125000 (AUS)

Kiwi visitor HISTORIAN could easily lead here, if he doesn't he won't be far away though & based on his form across the Tasman he's the one to beat. Very game beating all bar Silent Achiever two starts back which is a strong formline, betting moves important having not raced for 8 weeks though. CAMEO turned a bunch of 'duck eggs' around to score at Scone when box seated, likely to gain a similar soft run here & must be respected. ANGEL OF MERCY was sound in the Cup here last week; if they're running on he can definitely figure

SELECTIONS – HISTORIAN / ANGEL OF MERCY / CAMEO

RACE 5 – GRADE 3 GLENLOGAN PARK STAKES 1350m of $150000 (AUS)

Very interesting G3 for the mares in which we have the very classy PLATINUM ROCKER from the West taking on the flying SRIKANDI amongst others. Absolutely no knock on SRIKANDI however PLATINUM ROCKER is a G1 placegetter in the summer who will strip a lot fitter for the Gold Coast run, the firmer track will also be in her favour. SRIKANDI was the easiest of winners here last week, awkward alley however plenty of time to cross before the first turn, definite main danger. Liked the run of LA PIETA at the Coast, perfectly drawn here.

SELECTIONS – PLATINUM ROCKER / SRIKANDI / LA PIETA

RACE 6 – GRADE 2 MITAVITE BRC SIRES' PRODUCE STAKES 1350m of $250000 (AUS)

Doesn't look to be a great deal of speed engaged here with TIME FOR WAR likely to hold the front from the inside gate. BRAZEN BEAU draws perfectly & should strip fitter for the first up win here a fortnight back, he was strong to the line on that occasion suggesting the step up to 1350m won't cause any concerns here. Big opinion of LOOKS LIKE THE CAT who chased home BRAZEN BEAU in that race, will also benefit greatly & being a big striding type will lap up the additional 150m. Can't knock AIMEE apart from the gate or PRESSING (will give a start).

SELECTIONS – BRAZEN BEAU / AIMEE / LOOKS LIKE THE CAT

RACE 7 – GRADE 3 MULLINS LAWYERS GRAND PRIX STAKES 2200m of $150000 (AUS)

The final lead up to the Queensland Derby is the Grand Prix where Kiwi TELEPATHIC will be out to gain revenge on AMEXED who proved too strong to the line for him here a fortnight ago. Doubt he can as to the eye it certainly appeared AMEXED was holding, or if not slightly edging clear of TELEPATHIC in that final drive, he should be able to win again & start favourite in the Derby. TELEPATHIC was impressive back home & will definitely benefit from the run however I'm have a hunch there's improvement in AMEXED as well. RUDY was excellent last time after racing wide all the way.

SELECTIONS – AMEXED / RUDY / TELEPATHIC

RACE 8 – GRADE 1  JAMES BOAG'S PREMIUM DOOMBEN 10,000 1350m of $650000 (AUS)

The big one of the day is the G1 Doomben 10,000 in which BUFFERING will cross & lead, DRIEFONTEIN should park 2nd and it doesn't look a cracking tempo. Love the draw for SPIRIT OF BOOM, Tony Gollan has him flying & has had for some time, his last couple have been terrific from the back however this time he can make use of the good alley & break his Doomben duck. Couldn't have FAMOUS SEAMUS in the BTC Cup however if he runs up to that win I can here, he also draws well

& can be put away until needed in the straight. BUFFERING at his best would win this but he will need to lift.

SELECTIONS – SPIRIT OF BOOM / DRIEFONTEIN / BUFFERING
