Australia Racing Preview for 7/18/2014
by Grant Davies
Another mid-winter meet this Saturday at Flemington, and it’s got some good fields assembled. Let’s take a look and see if we can’t make the weekend a winner.
FLEMINGTON – AUS A
RACE 1 - HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP 1200m of $100000 (AUS)
Rail will be out 4m today, so fair to suspect run-ons will have their chance today. There is depth in this race, the top four are last start winners, of those, leaning to DUP' EM who won a deep race on debut against the pattern of the day as it turned out. TAN TAT DIAMOND was well backed on debut and beat one who was off a good debut to the smart Malaguerra. GRANDE ROSSO resumes and he showed good ability that first prep. Both FITNA and BELUGA CAVIAR have looked good at jump outs, wary!
SELECTIONS – DUP’EM / FITNA / TAN TAT DIAMOND
RACE 4 - BRUCE GADSDEN HANDICAP 1000m of $80000 (AUS)
SEVEN FALLS resumes and his debut win was excellent, no doubt about it. He then had excuses in town and has trialled well for the return. WHISTLE BABY had good backing late fresh but did not seem to get going at all. The rider said she didn't handle the ground and the vet found some other issues too. She won well here second up last prep. TREVINDER just missed Seymour in a decent race. He split two smart ones there I fancy. STAMINA has the quality, his Arabian Gold and Bull Point form stands out but is 1000m too sharp for him? COSMIC LIGHTS impressed on debut. HANDSOME TYCOON has a case too.
SELECTIONS – SEVEN FALLS / STAMINA / COSMIC LIGHTS
RACE 5 - ASCOT RACECOURSE HANDICAP 2000m of $100000 (AUS)
This is a tricky one! ROYAL MEPHISTO impressed last time when second up jumping 1300m to 2000m off that good return against the savage bias. ECLAIR SAMBA is another up in grade but suspect he measures up too. Love his form at/around this trip. FULGUR is hardly 'sacked' off a 3L defeat to Marksmanship (who then won again) and Flemington will suit him better. How strong is he at 2000m though? SHENZHOU STEEDS is ready to win and, of course he beat Fulgur home last time. ROWLAND will bob-up one day at big odds, maybe today?
SELECTIONS – ÉCLAIR SAMBE / FULGAR / SHENZOU STEEDS
RACE 7 - SINGAPORE TURF CLUB HANDICAP 1000m of $80000 (AUS)
ZAMORAR resumes, liked his trial win, he was touched-off by Pago Rock here fresh last year, and I fancy him here today. SMACKDOWN also resumes, all his fresh form is good, and taking line through Shamal Wind he can measure up here and may be the overs? GENERAL TRUCE back at 1000m is probably the key, can win this, the old star. MR MAKE BELIEVE was not far off the runner-up fresh and that form was franked last week. SEA LORD a hope too, betting lead there?
SELECTIONS – ZAMORAR / GENERAL TRUCE / MR MAKE BELIEVE
