Australia Racing Preview for 7/4/2014
by Grant Davies
Racing returns to the “Heath” this Saturday, home of the Caulfield Cup and a definite sign that we are starting to see our shift towards our spring racing carnival, a little early I know but still exciting! There’s a good days racing ahead and we are going to make some money! Happy 4th of July!!
CAULFIELD – AUS A
RACE 6 GROUP 3 POLYTRACK SIR JOHN MONASH STAKES 1100m of $135000 (AUS)
LORD OF THE SKY was just way to smart for them last time; he ran fast overall time (albeit at 1000m with 51kg) but now does have 58kg and steps up to 1100m at WFA. The first 600m was in 34.2 and in that race he sustained around 11-second sectionals (WOW). If AFRICAN PULSE is back to being at his best then he will take some beating here. Looking at his latest jump out, he very well may be! Was unbeaten (five from five) fresh into last campaign and he returns a gelding here. LE BONSIR has run well at weight-for-age and is G1 class. GOOD VALUE is just a good horse, and I have no doubt he will be charging at them late, but will it be too late? READY TO RIP has to be considered on track love alone, but he is also a genuine contender.
SELECTIONS – LORD OF THE SKY / AFRICAN PULSE / READY TO RIP
RACE 7 - BMW MELBOURNE HANDICAP 1200m of $80000 (AUS)
OCTAVIA was brave in matching it with Vain Queen at Moonee Valley last time and held on well given what she went on to do to handy field of males last week at Flemington (remember, second was Nautical who won 40mins later) can’t get much better form than that. The claim helps and she likes Caulfield. BLOOMINGDALE MISS was a real black-booker fresh over 1000m, coming widest against the pattern and finding the line sweetly. That makes this 1200m look ideal. HAI LIL has definitely got a touch of class; her fresh run at what I believe is an unsuitable distance of 1000m in that same race was good. NADEEM LASS and CLASSY CHLOE head quite a big list of other 'half-chances' that will step out on track here. Big field here so be wary, CHEEKY ROZAY might be one to sneak under the radar.
SELECTIONS – OCTAVIA / HAI LIL / BLOOMINGDALE MISS
RACE 8 - RACE-TECH AUSTRALIA HANDICAP 2000m of $80000. (AUS)
FULGUR was held-up badly MV last time then charged home strongly which was completely against the bias that day. VIHANNA VICTORY's form is deceiving, much better than it looks on paper, with no weight here she will definitely be the value in this race! MARKSMANSHIP has upside, the 2000m will be absolutely no issue, however the level of pressure for he and LIGHTENUFF (as well as pattern obviously) are definitely going to play a huge role. WHISPER DOWNS was actually quite good last time. Wetter the better for VOILA ICI & SHENZOU STEEDS.
SELECTIONS – FULGAR / VIHANNA VICTORY / MARKSMANSHIP
CAULFIELD RACES PICK 4 RACE 5: 5,7,12 RACE 6: 1, 6, 8 RACE 7: 1, 4,8,15 RACE 8: 2, 4, 10, 12
