PHILLY FROSH
Thursday / July 15 - Philly
Three freshman-filly pacer divisions of the Pennsylvania Sires Stakes (PASS), worth $54k-plus each, are the focus in the afternoon at Philly.
Race 4
Six are on board for this set of green gals bred in the Keystone State. Five represents sires Sweet Lou and Captaintreacherous and Betting Line has a solo. Ron Burke sends No Foolin (Sweet Lou) to her second race and she should be offering the best odds of the three top public choices which include Heartbreak Hotel and Captain Cowgirl.
Race 6
Another sextet of fillies are in round two, in which we like the Always B Miki product, Hit Me Up. She has a second-place finish in a single outing and will be going after Jazzed, the Betting Line filly, who is 2-for-2 for Julie Miller. Also noted is one of the last babies from Somebeachsomewhere, Treacherous Kiss, in her second appearance. She could be a good price and a good exotic addition.
Race 10
In the third division, also with 10, we hope to stop obvious favorite Im No April Fool with another Always B Mike fem, St Nevis. She’ll leave from the inside and should improve enough to get over the favorite after a fine finish second.
N.Y. SOPH SIRENS
Thursday / July 15 - Yonkers
A trio of New York Sires Stakes (NYSS) offers $50k each for soph-filly pacers at night at Yonkers.
Race 2
Test of Faith, the division’s dominatrix, heads seven at the gate in the first NYSS of the evening. She has it easy from post 4, having already won big from the outside against in- and out-of-state fillies. Think of Galaxies would make for a good paying exacta with the top gal.
Race 3
Heart of Mine will have to dig hard to find a way to lose this, especially on the front-loving four turns at Yonkers. Tom Fanning’s Summer Rae could sit right behind her and make this a breeze pacing one-two all the way around.
Race 4
This field has seven and the best chance for an upset winner. The most inexperienced here, Industrial Hemp, is a Roll With Joe filly that could be much better against these types than she has raced in her mere three efforts, two of which hit the board, one of which is a win. With Delightful Z Tam caught and finishing second, it’s a sharp exacta play.
SUMMER SONS
Friday / July 16 - Yonkers
Two-year-old colt pacers are featured in the $150k MGM Springfield stakes final; a field of eight green ones go the distance. There is a pair of Huntsville sons here and they each won a Springfield elim. Gone Before Dawn and Letmecallyouback will be sharp, the former with post 8 and the latter with post 5. Hunstville has been sending strong progeny out for state-bred events and is a surprisingly successful sire so far. Still, we’ll take a shot with Te Amo Blue Chip, the only son of Roll With Joe in this field. He beat the favorite in the Gone Before Dawn elim, finishing third, and looks to have inherited the better instincts of his sire to win his second time out.
TOUGH TEN
Saturday / July 16 - Meadowlands
The $700k Meadowlands Pace (MP) presents one of the tougher assembly of glamour-boy pacers than in a while. We have established a quartet from the 10 in the field that we hope will emerge as overlays. Here they are with comments in the order of our hopeful odds.
Southwind Gendry (7-2) – His return to the winner’s circle in an elim was well worth 10-1 because from the beginning of the season for this crop he was rightfully the most likely MP winner.
Perfect Sting (9-2) – He is in a perfect spot to reinstate himself in the division, making most of the others look like distractions.
Charlie May (6-1) – What a great elim he had to catapult into this event. Again, the crowd may probably dismiss him.
One Eight Hundred (6-1) – If he does not win he should hit the tote board as a strong exotic partner.
DANCERS
Saturday / July 17 - Meadowlands
There are two divisions for the Stanley Dancer Memorial, featuring the Hambletonian-bound glamour-boy trotters.
The first split, worth $135k, features the “now” horse Dancinginthedark M. Trot-chief Marcus Melander aims him for the big show with confidence, though the public will probably not anoint him the favorite. Even if they did, we are more interested in Jim Campbell’s Take All Comers. He was right behind “Dancing” in the Reynolds and in this group may go off higher than 9-2, a good price for such an upset.
The second episode hosts seven for $138k. Venerate is here. He is one of two Love You colts and Julie Miller has him on a direct path to the August classic. Rattle My Cage is the other Love You colt. Anette Lorentzon’s charge broke at 6-1 in the Reynolds won by Venerate. We give him a chance to redeem himself at a fair 5-1 this time and going smoothly clearly makes those chances an overlay.
MILLER OAKS GALS
Saturday / July 17 - Meadowlands
Two divisions of the Del Miller Memorial for the glamour-girl trotters brings some of these closer to the Hambletonian Oaks or to the boys in the main game.
The $142k split opens the program. Contested Hanover went a big mile at Tioga trying to get her first win of the season but was hanging most of the way. She should enjoy the two turns missing from her place-and-show scores.
The $135k split could result in a big price for You Ato Dream. She has toured Pennsylvania tracks with success and got stuck leaving from post 10 on her first 2021 visit to the Meadowlands. She has matured and is off to a good start but not so branded as to attract a crowd at the windows.
