Big Payouts in 2016 Quarter Horse Futurities
Handicapping Quarter Horse futurities can be a challenge, as many of the entrants are just beginning their racing careers and don't have extensive past performance information. Every now and then, there is one standout who lives up to post-time favoritism, but in the last few months, many fastest qualifiers have not run back to form in the final.
A few recent examples include Watergirl B, the ninth fastest qualifier in trials for the $690,295 Lee Berwick Futurity at Delta Downs on July 9. The Game Patriot filly got a great break and a clean path to the wire under veteran rider, Gilbert Ortiz. Dismissed at 42-1, she rewarded her backers with a win payout of $86.20.

Just last weekend Miss Alluring Menace ($44.60) won the $433,050 TQHA Sale Futurity at Retama Park. She was the eighth-fastest qualifier in trials, and was still a maiden coming into the final. Truck Yeah, at 37-to-1, pulled the shocker under jockey Larry Payne in the Grade 1 $89,100 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity Saturday night at Fair Meadows. Fans who backed this longshot cashed a win ticket for $74.80. On Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs, Hot Indy Chick at 18-1, scored the victory in the $409,110 Zia Futurity (RG1) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds.
So how can Quarter Horse handicappers predict when the next big upset will take place?
There is no concrete answer to that, but watching replays of the trial races can uncover some clues. Also, follow post position success at certain tracks. Miss Alluring Menace rallied from post position nine at Retama Park, when most of the winners were firing from outside posts. Don't be afraid to use the "all" button for the Futurity when playing Pick 3 or Pick 4 wagers, especially if races with more experienced runners are carded in the exotic wager sequence.
Finally, get to know the top 2-year-old sires, as that knowledge will pay big dividends in handicapping these races. Information on Quarter Horse sires is easy to access and FREE on StallioneSearch.com. Check it out to give yourself the edge in handicapping the remaining futurities of 2016!
