Big Weekend at Ruidoso Downs with 30 Trials for the All American Futurity

August 16th, 2016

Imagine if all horses nominated to the Kentucky Derby competed against each other in races at Churchill Downs in April, and only the fastest horses qualified for the prestigious Run for the Roses!  In Quarter Horse racing, this is exactly how the field is determined for the richest race of the sport, the Grade 1 All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.  Two days of trials for the $3 million All American Futurity will be held on August 19 and 20 with the top five fastest from each day continuing to the final on Labor Day.

The trials will include a mix of proven futurity champions and untested, but well-bred juveniles competing at a distance of 440 yards. It will be a long day for each of the connections who will have to watch 15 races before knowing if their charge had a time fast enough to advance to the final.  Of course, the light at the end of the rainbow is a winner's check for $1.5 million dollars as well as probable AQHA champion 2-year-old honors.

A few of the horses to watch include A Revenant, winner of the  Grade 1, $1 million Rainbow Futurity on July 24 for trainer Mike Joiner. Cody Jensen will ride the son of Mr Jess Perry in Friday's fifth trial, breaking from the rail.

Two-time futurity winner, Duponte has already topped $500,000 in earnings this year with titles in both Harrah's Entertainment Futurity at Louisiana Downs and the $1.1 million Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park. Bred by AQHA champion breeder Bobby Cox, Duponte, who is sired by American Runaway, runs in Friday's final  trial from the fifth post position.  Francisco Ramirez, Jr. has the mount for trainer Josue Ponce.

Top ranked Quarter Horse trainer Judd Kearl will saddle the Teller Cartel filly, Teller Baja, who captured the $888,000 Remington Park Oklahoma-bred Futurity earlier this year. She drew post four in Friday’s 14th race.

The action gets underway at a special early post time of 11 am (Mountain).  The trial times will be updated after each heat via the Ruidoso Downs Race Track Twitter feed:  (@RuiPressBox).
