Bombs Away in Round 1 of JJPSC

February 22nd, 2017

Talk about making it interesting from the start! The 2017 edition of the $50,000 James J Patton Silver Cup was just that in round 1. Of the 8 races, only one was won by the favorite. The other 7 trips were won by greyhound that were not supposed to win, and that spreads the points out all over the place as we now prepare for round 2. The big winner on the evening had to be the Pat Collins Kennel. Winning 2 of the rounds, and finishing in the money in 5 of their 6 entries, they seem to be the one to beat next time out. Let’s take a closer look at the races and how it all played out in round number 1.

Pat Collins scored their two victories in the 9th and 11th races on the card. Pat C Ramblin was the winner in race 9 as he broke close, rushed to the early lead, cutoff Ww’s Sammy at the turn and took the lead down the backside. Stealing away a few lengths there, he was able to make it to the wire and hold off the late charging Easi Charlie at the line for the slime win. Js Armdndangerus was a threat throughout and was always just a length or so off the pace. Sammy rallied on the rail to complete the superfecta.

Collins other winner was Pat C Gangster in the 11th race. This one was no gimmie and he had to work hard to get the job done. Hitting the lid was Ww’s Quick Brady. He clearly took the early lead and moved to the outside part of the racetrack. He was followed by Superior Hearns, Ww’s Marsala and the eventual winner Pat C Gangsta. Around the turn and down the backside they went with Quick Brady in control. By the far turn the field was catching up as Pat C Gangsta looked to split the leaders, Brady and Superior Hearns, but was bumped back a bit and gave the advantage to Brady as they raced around the turn and for the finish line. Heading home Brady swung wide again and took the closing Gangsta with him. There it became a two-way battle for the win, but this time Brady was not strong enough. Gangsta turned it on in the final few strides and secured the win at the wire. Brady ran a wining trip but finished second, followed by Ww’s Marsala in 3rd and Superior Hearns in 4th.

The quickest trip, and most dominate performance on the card, came in the 7th race. Ln Michaels, from the Double J Kennel, took advantage of the ideal 8 box at the start in this race and turned it into a thing of beauty. Breaking close, he outrushed the early leaders in the first few steps, and took over control of this race as he slashed to the rail. Once his nose was out in the clean air on the lead, this race was over. With every step, he took he increased his margin. Crossing 5 full lengths ahead of the rest, his 30.58 time was the best on the card in round 1. Making up ground late, Ww Speed Train came from last to steal away a photo for place. Hilco Spartain was the chaser throughout and had to settle for show as he was nipped at the line. Fourth place was Bgr Yosemite Sam who also was a place threat from start to finish.

The only favorite to win was Real Good Feelin from the DQ Williams Kennel. Showing off her natural prowess, Feelin was close from the start and stalked the early pace of Kiowa Pinot Noir through the first turn and down the backside. By the 660 box she had caught the leader and from that point on, this race was over. Drawing clear on the lead, she hit the nitro and left the field behind her. Drawing away to the wire, she crossed 4 lengths better than her rivals in a speedy 30.65 second clocking. Early leader Pinot Noir survived the late challenges for place, as even factors Ww’s Lost Girl and Flying Riverwood never varied and finished in show and 4th respectively.

The others winners on the card included Kc’s Todd in the 4th race. Idaho Sal in the 10th race, Ww’s Epic in the 12th race and Bl Warlock in the 13th. The Crowe Kennels Kc’s Todd broke behind early leader Godzilla Who, but defeated the big guy down the backside. By the far turn he was easily in command and coasted to the wire for the 4-length victory over Boc’s Queen Lady, the aforementioned Godzilla Who, and Pat C Outbounds. Idaho Sal, from the Clear Lake Kennel, broke in the middle of the pack, but put on a huge rush to the turn and left trouble behind him as he headed up the backside with a big-time lead. Needing every inch of those 4 lengths, he dwindled away almost all of it by the time he hit the wire. Winning by the slimmest of margins, a nose, Sal recorded the win in the photo over Boc’s Andross by that nose, and Ln Sugar by a neck. Wiki Jax Attack finished 4th. Ww’s Epic scored for the Sarras Kennel in the 12th race as former puppy stakes champ Pullanallnighter bombed the box and put three lengths on the rest early on. By the far turn, Epic had closed that margin to just a length, and in the stretch the leader would be no match for Epic coming home. Taking over late, Epic won by a length at the finish line over the early leader. Finishing a game third was Kane’s Mini as Pat C Randolph completed the superfecta. Finally, was Bl Warlock who took the win for the Blanchard kennel in the 13th race. This former dominate grade A at OP seemed to find his mojo from the great 1 box that he had in this trip around the oval. Breaking behind the early leader Ln Double Stuff, and the stalking threat Pat C Cozy, he had his work cut out for him early on. He chased the duo through the turn, up the backside, through the far turn, and in the stretch, he finally made his move. Closing with a rush, he stole away the win from the late leading Pat C Cozy at the wire. Cozy ran a huge race, but had to settle for place as the track record holder Kmz Kraken got all revved up late and came flying in on the leaders in the final few strides for show. Early leader Ln Double stuff was outfinished in the stretch and recorded a 4th place finish just a length and a half off of the win.

All the greyhound will return for the second round on Friday Evening February 24th at bestbet Jacksonville. With all of the none favorites winning, it could prove interesting to see just who shows up in round 2 and who gets enough points to move on as the field will be cut in half for the quarterfinals. Make you plans and don’t miss out on all of the action in this years $50,000 James J Patton Silver Cup.
