Breeders' Cup Distaff -- I'm a Chatterbox

October 28th, 2016

Everyone knows who the big guns are in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) – Beholder, Songbird, Stellar Wind – but what about the rest of the field? Check out some of the other contenders in the 1 1/8-mile affair based on their 2016 records alone.

I’m a Chatterbox – 5-3-1-0, $905,000

Owner: Fletcher and Carolyn Gray
Trainer: Larry Jones

I’m a Chatterbox began 2016 at the same track she ended 2015 – Keeneland. The Munnings filly finished second while making her April 22 seasonal debut in the Doubledogdare Stakes (G3), for which she only earned a 93 BRIS Speed rating.

Two months later, though, the four-year-old chestnut found herself at Delaware Park and proceeded to dominate the Obeah Handicap by 8 1/2 lengths.

That was just a warm-up, as I’m a Chatterbox’s main goal was the Delaware Handicap (G1) on July 16, which the chestnut lass easily scored in by 2 1/4 lengths. The win didn’t come without some drama, though, as I’m a Chatterbox bobbled at the break and then took a left-hand turn, nearly taking out her three inside rivals. She recovered and went on to win, but had to survive an objection that was eventually not allowed following a stewards’ inquiry.

The four-year-old miss tried to lead all the way home in the Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) at Saratoga next, but someone had to be fourth in what turned out to be a four-horse blanket finish. I’m a Chatterbox was only beaten 1 1/4 lengths on that occasion, and returned last out at Keeneland for a seven-length romp in the October 9 Spinster Stakes (G1) in her final prep for the Distaff.
