The History of the John A. Nelrud Stakes

Founded in 2008, the John A. Nelrud Stakes is a Grade II thoroughbred race held in Elmont, NY at Belmont Park. First run as the James Marvin Stakes, the race was known as the Belmont Sprint Championship Stakes until 2018 when the name was changed to honor John Nerud, the famed owner and trainer who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972. Since 2017, the race has been a "win and you're in" qualifying race for the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
