Royal Lodge Stakes Race History
The Royal Lodge Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race run each year on the Rowley Mile at the Newmarket Racecourse in Suffolk, England. Inaugurated in 1946, the race is contested at 1 mile and takes place in late September.
Lester Poggott, considered one of the greatest flat racing jockeys of all time, has won the race a record eight times (1957, 1959, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1975, 1982). For his first five wins, Lester rode horses trained by Noel Murless, who holds a record eight wins of his own.
As part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series, the winner automatically qualifies for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
