How to bet the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

An intriguing cast of 11 will vie for $1 million in Saturday's Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Keeneland.
The eight-furlong tilt on the main oval lacks a true standout, in my opinion, and the morning-line favorite could be vulnerable on the rail. I’ll look for value in the competitive contest.
Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile wagers
- $15 win and place #3 Full Serrano ($30)
- $1 Trifecta: 3,7 with 1,3,6,7,10 with 1,3,6,7,10 ($24)
- 20-cent Superfecta: 3,7 with 3,7 with 1,6,10 with ALL ($9.60)
I really liked the prep put in by #3 Full Serrano (10-1) when he was third in the Pacific Classic (G1) at 1 1/4 miles while hounded throughout by Classic contender Knightsbridge. Trained by John Sadler, the seven-year-old son of Full Mast captured this race in 2024, and while he is just one-for-six since that major tally, there is plenty of reason for optimism.
Full Serrano will be strong at this distance, making just his second run since the spring, and the Argentine has also been training in rapid fashion in advance of Saturday. He looks like the speed of the speed to me, and I expect Joel Rosario to put him on the front end soon after the break.
Victoria Oliver’s #7 Bracket Buster (7-2) may be the main danger to the upset selection. The four-year-old son of Vekoma has earned triple-digit Brisnet Speed ratings in five races in succession and seems perfectly set up to run a peak race third time off the shelf. He has performed pretty well in each of his three prior tries on the Keeneland surface, which has been his home base for a long time. The bay colt has some versatility in his running style and will get first run on the deep-closing types in the tilt under regular rider John Velazquez.
#10 Owen Almighty (10-1) is a hard-trying colt who has hit the board in each of his handful of performances at the one-mile distance for conditioner Brian Lynch. The Grade 3 victor is also versatile and could be a major threat at the top of the lane if the pace of the race collapses. Luis Saez will ride.
#1 Further Ado (2-1) impressed me with a rallying second in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1) in his latest showing for Brad Cox. The sophomore morphs into another animal at Keeneland, as well, winning his two career runs at this venue by a combined 31 lengths, led by a stroll in the Bluegrass (G1) in the spring. The Gun Runner sophomore will face his elders from a tricky post, however, and I’ll limit his usage to the vertical exotics.
I admittedly don’t know a lot about Japanese import #6 Lord Fons (15-1), but the six-year-old has held up well against some pretty good ones over the past few seasons and can’t be ignored in this spot. He put in a maintenance drill on the surface to acclimate to his surroundings on Tuesday and could be any kind under regular rider Yokoyama.
