British Spot Plays: Goodwood for July 28, 2026

The British Betting Bankroll resumes this week in time for the Goodwood Festival, colloquially known as “Glorious Goodwood,” which runs five days from Tuesday through Saturday. 

When I last offered spot plays for the English flat, I enjoyed a strong 3-for-4 day on the Thursday card of Royal Ascot but gave some of the profit back on the Friday when my attempts to topple some favorites backfired.

Heading into Goodwood’s Tuesday card, the bankroll stands at $1,252.15 from a starting point of $500. I’ll wager 5% of the outstanding balance to win on each of the following selections, beginning with a $63 play.

Race 2: Vintage (G2), 9:25 a.m. ET

Superlative (G2) winner Al Hudaiba is a solid favorite here but must carry a three-pound penalty. I’ll take him on with stakes newcomer #2 Dr Rascal (8-1).

Dr Rascal brings a 2-for-2 record into the Vintage, a race connections seemingly had an eye on for him since before his last start, a novice at Ascot. 

The colt showed character in winning. Spooked by a rival behind the gate, Dr Rascal unseated jockey Kaiya Fraser and perhaps was lucky to be allowed to race at all. Dr Rascal proved all business, leading for nearly every jump while displaying both speed and an ability to stay farther. He’s deserving of a shot at this level. 

Race 3: Lennox (G2), 10 a.m. ET

Early favorite Lake Forest perhaps was the best horse in this race a year ago despite finishing second to returning rival Witness Stand. And Qirat is 3-for-3 over this course, including a massive 150-1 upset of the Sussex (G1) last year. However, I’ll be going in a different direction.

Although he has but one win on grass to date (over soft), #3 Marvelman (9-2) offers some value here. That win came in the Park (G2) at Doncaster in September, which he won stylishly over a group that included Witness Stand, 2024 Lennox winner Audience, and recent Queen Anne (G1) upsetter Ten Bob Tony.

Marvelman returned from a 4 1/2-month spell in last month’s Chipchase (G3) over Newcastle’s all-weather, finishing second in a race he can progress from. Trainer Andrew Balding enters this week on a roll, too, after enjoyed a marvelous Saturday punctuated by Kalpana’s win in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (G1).

Race 4: Goodwood Cup (G1), 10:35 a.m. ET

Defending titlist Scandinavia is the current king of the European stayers, but if there’s a chance to briefly knock him off his throne it could be in this race, where he will receive no weight concession from #7 Trawlerman (2-1).

Scandinavia needed virtually every inch of the 2 1/2-mile Ascot Gold Cup (G1) to overtake Trawlerman, who ran one of the bravest races in defeat I’ve ever watched. Trawlerman was conceding one pound as well as recency to Scandinavia, who had had the benefit of two preps.

Trawlerman, too, has winning form over this tricky course, and once again looks like the horse to run down. At around 2-1, I’m willing to give him a big chance against the odds-on favorite.
