California Chrome arrived at Santa Anita Park around noon (PT) on Sunday to begin his final preparations for Saturday’s $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes (G1).
“The trip was uneventful,” assistant trainer Alan Sherman said following California Chrome’s 34-mile freeway trek from his base at Los Alamitos. “He’s a trooper. He doesn’t mind traveling, that’s for sure. He’ll jog tomorrow on the main track and we’ll go out with him at about 7 (a.m.).”
The 1 1/8-mile Awesome Again is California Chrome’s final start ahead of the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita Park on November 5.
The gleaming chestnut, who is North America’s all-time leading money earner with a bankroll of $13,252,650, put in his final major move for the Awesome Again on Saturday at Los Alamitos.
The son of Lucky Pulpit went out early under exercise rider Dihigi Gladney and recorded fractions of :25 1/5, :49 1/5, 1:01 and 1:13. He concluded his seven-furlong move in 1:26 2/5.
“I thought the work was just perfect,” trainer Art Sherman said. “He’s ready to go.”
