It may have been California Chrome Day in Cypress, California, on Saturday, but the namesake didn’t get the day off.
Instead, California Chrome worked five furlongs in 1:00.80 over the fast main track at Los Alamitos.
The 2014 Horse of the Year, Kentucky Derby (G1) winner and recent Pacific Classic (G1) hero was caught in splits of :24.20 and :48.80 under regular exercise rider Dihigi Gladney before galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.20, according to Los Alamitos clocker Russell Hudak.
“I was very satisfied with the work today, he was just galloping. He couldn’t be doing any better right now,” trainer Art Sherman stated.
The horseman said his chestnut charge would have two more works before going in the Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park on October 1.
That 1 1/8-mile contest will be California Chrome’s final prep for the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on November 5 at Santa Anita.
