California Chrome works three-quarters for San Pasqual

The gleaming chestnut covered six furlongs in 1:13 4/5 with exercise rider Dihigi Gladney aboard, recording splits of :25 4/5 and :49 4/5 before galloping out in 1:28.3/5.
“He’s doing really well, and we got a couple of key works left and we’ll be ready for January 9, I’m hoping,” trainer Art Sherman said.
“He’s been coming into these last few works really strong,” Gladney agreed. “I was talking to the owners about a week or two ago and I was telling them after that little zippy half-mile work we put in him it kind of woke him up.
“He’s really strong, he’s training hard.”
California Chrome posted a four-furlong time of :50 1/5 on November 21 in what was just his second stateside work since March, when the Lucky Pulpit colt shipped out for the Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1).
California Chrome ran second in that contest on March 28, then headed to England for a try at the Prince of Wales’s S. (Eng-G1). A foot bruise forced him out of the Royal Ascot event and he shipped back to the United States for a start in the Arlington Million (G1).
Yet another problem surfaced, this time a cannon bone issue, which knocked California Chrome out for the rest of the year. He just returned to the worktab on November 14 with a three-furlong move in :39 3/5 at Los Alamitos.
California Chrome is now readying for the San Pasqual and could go on to once again contest the Dubai World Cup in March.
“We’ll work him again next Saturday, the day after Christmas, and then I’m probably going to take him over and work him at Santa Anita in between races. They’ve been wanting to have him over there for the public,” Sherman remarked.
“It’ll probably be beneficial for me and then we’ll just leave him there and run on January 9.”
