Call Pat rallies for Bayakoa victory

Miller Racing LLC’s Call Pat bided her time in the rear of Sunday’s $100,000 Bayakoa S. (G3) before rallying in the stretch to run down pacesetter Meshell and Streamline for the half-length win under jockey Joe Rocco Jr.

The Brad Cox trainee settled in eighth and last from her outside post as Meshell made her way to the front through an opening quarter in :24.10. Cabana took up position to Meshell’s outside while Streamline and 7-5 favorite Sarah Sis kept each other company on either side of Cabana.

Call Pat maintained her rear-running position until hitting the turn. Meshell had set splits of :48.88 and 1:14.36 up to this point and was fighting with Streamline in the lane to maintain her advantage. Call Pat angled out three wide entering the stretch and set her sights on the dueling front runners. The dark bay mare shifted into high gear and ran them down in the shadow of the wire to stop the clock in 1:45.81 over Oaklawn Park’s fast dirt.

Call Pat paid $6.80 as the near 5-2 second choice. It was another half-length back to Streamline, who stuck her neck in front on the wire to get the best of Meshell in third. Sarah Sis was a distant 8 1/4 lengths back in fourth, but just held that spot by a nose over Cabana.

Call Pat earned her second graded victory in this spot after taking last year’s Groupie Doll S. (G3) at Ellis Park. The Lawyer Ron mare closed out her five-year-old campaign with a pair of third-place runs in the Turnback the Alarm H. (G3) and Falls City H. (G2), and also placed in the Mari Hulman George S. last season.

Bred in Kentucky by Don Ameche III, Don Ameche Jr. and Prancing Horse Enterprises, Call Pat was a bargain $7,500 Keeneland September yearling purchase in 2011. Thus far she’s banked $404,589 in her career while racking up a 29-6-5-5 record.

Call Pat is the only registered stakes winner out of the Rahy mare First Song.
