Catch a Glimpse ready to take on the boys in the Penn Mile

June 1st, 2016

Catch a Glimpse has achieved much in her brief career. Undefeated in six career outings on turf, the three-year-old filly is also the reigning Canadian Horse of the Year. The next frontier is a win over males, which the Mark Casse trainee will attempt to do Saturday in the $500,000 Penn Mile (G3) at Penn National.

The Penn Mile highlights the most lucrative card of the season at the suburban Harrisburg track. The four open stakes that begin the program carry purses totaling $1,050,000.

After wins in the Natalma (G2) and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at two, Catch a Glimpse has not missed a beat this term with victories in the Herecomesthebride (G3), Appalachian (G3) and Edgewood (G3). However, the margins of victory in her last two have been less than a length, and the Penn Mile will undoubtedly be a stiffer test.

"At the end of a race, she might seem distracted and you think someone's going to collar her, but no one has," regular rider Florent Geroux said.

Among the six males she faces is stablemate Airoforce, who enjoyed a tremendous juvenile campaign himself winning the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) and Bourbon (G3) and narrowly missing in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). The son of Colonel John has struggled this year losing as the favorite three times. After running up the track in the Risen Star (G2) and Spiral (G3), he faded to fourth in the American Turf (G2) most recently after setting the pace.

Spiral winner Oscar Nominated has a win and two seconds in three turf outings for trainer Mike Maker, including a score in the $50,000 Black Gold at Fair Grounds. The Kitten's Joy colt comes off a 17th place effort in the Kentucky Derby (G1) for owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey.

Chad Brown has taken over training duties for Beach Patrol, who missed by a head to Camelot Kitten in the American Turf. The Lemon Drop Kid colt had beaten maiden and allowance company at Santa Anita previously for Phil D'Amato.

Also lining up in the Penn Mile are Giant Run, first or second in three Gulfstream stakes this year; multiple stakes-placed Unbridled Daddy; and recent Laurel allowance winner Silent Waters.

The hugely popular 10-year-old warrior Ben's Cat heads one of the track's oldest features, the $150,000 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup at five furlongs on the turf. The King Leatherbury trainee enters off a thrilling neck victory in the Jim McKay Turf Sprint, his fifth in the Preakness Day feature at Pimlico. Ben's Cat has won the Governor's Cup once, in 2011, and missed by a nose in last year's renewal.

Also lining up is Spring to the Sky, second in the Jim McKay at odds of 25-1, and multiple stakes winner Cyclogenisis.

The $200,000 Penn Oaks, for three-year-old fillies at one mile on turf, kicks off the card. Sweetest Chant (G3) winner Pricedtoperfection and $75,000 Honey Ryder heroine Sweet Victory are among the favorites, along with multiple Grade 3-placed Outsider Art and the Casse-trained allowance winner Conquest Serenade, who is making her turf debut.

The $200,000 Mountainview H., for older horses at nine furlongs on the main track, attracted just five entries. Multiple Grade 2 veteran Red Rifle and New Orleans H. (G2) winner S'maverlous are the marquee names.
