Catch a Glimpse returns to action in Herecomesthebride

February 24th, 2016

Preps for the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1) obviously take center stage at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, but fans of turf racing, especially those of the stakes variety, will have a lot to chew on as well during the course of the marathon 13-race program.

The Mark Casse-trained Catch a Glimpse, who pulled off a mild upset of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at Keeneland in October, makes her sophomore debut in the $150,000 Herecomesthebride (G3) over 1 1/16 miles. Fifth in her debut over Saratoga's main track, the City Zip filly rattled off three straight turf wins to conclude her freshman campaign, including a pre-Breeders' Cup romp of five lengths in the Natalma (G2) at Woodbine.

Also among the field of eight three-year-old fillies is Lira, who enters unbeaten from three starts including stakes triumphs in the $75,000 Wait a While and $100,000 Ginger Brew on this circuit.

One of Gulfstream's oldest grass events, the $150,000 Canadian Turf (G3) at one mile, is led by Heart to Heart, whose dangerous early speed has made him five-time graded winner since 2014. Most recently, the Brian Lynch held off subsequent Grade 1 scorer Lukes Alley to take the January 9 Ft. Lauderdale (G2) by a half-length.

Long On Value, who upset the 2015 Canadian Turf at odds of 10-1, makes his return to the races following a layoff of more than eight months. Third in the Maker's 46 Mile (G1) following his Canadian Turf triumph, the Bill Mott charge's season came to close after unplaced efforts in the Dixie (G2) and Poker (G3).

Divisidero, who took the American Turf (G2) and $200,000 Pennine Ridge last May, also returns from a long layoff. Buff Bradley's four-year-old was backed down to 5-2 in the Belmont Derby (G1) when last seen July 4, but showed little late when finishing seventh.

Other notables include Avanzare, a two-time Grade 2 winner in California last season, and Play the King (G2) runner-up Tower of Texas.

The best betting races on the card might be the $150,000 Palm Beach (G3) for three-year-olds and the $100,000 Sand Springs for older fillies and mares, both of which attracted fields of 14.

Among those with established stakes form in the 1 1/16-mile Palm Beach are With Anticipation (G2) winner Azar, elevated to second behind J R's Holiday in the $100,000 Kitten's Joy last out, and Dania Beach (G3) third-place finisher Urban Bourbon.

The one-mile Sand Springs, which is new to the Gulfstream stakes schedule this year, features graded stakes veterans Daring Kathy and Strike Charmer, $200,000 Pebbles heroine Partisan Politics, and the multiple stakes-winning Celestine. The latter, trained by Mott, narrowly missed behind subsequent Suwannee River (G3) vixen Tammy the Torpedo last out in the $80,000 Tropical Park Oaks and might go off the slight favorite.

The stakes action, indeed all of the day's action, kicks off with the $75,000 Texas Glitter, a five-furlong dash for three-year-olds. Logical contenders include Noholdingback Bear, Expected Ruler, Manhattan Dan, and Duffle Bag.
