Churchill Downs hosts Thoroughbred Aftercare Day Sept. 27

September 22nd, 2025

For all the thrills and excitement that racehorses give us during their time competing on the track, our equine athletes deserve to have loving homes after they retire. That’s why aftercare is so essential to the world of horse racing, helping with the transition to new adventures, fresh purpose, or just the relaxation of a quiet life with friends.

Fans will have a special opportunity to learn about organizations involved with these efforts during the Sept. 27 Thoroughbred Aftercare Day at Churchill Downs. It’s also a major raceday, with the Lukas Classic (G2) featuring 2024 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mystik Dan and reigning Dubai World Cup (G1) victor Hit Show.

Even if you can’t be in Louisville, Kentucky, you can still participate by supporting the vital work of aftercare organizations. A virtual auction is being conducted until 7 p.m. ET on Sept. 27. Among the unique items up for bid online are a meet-and-greet with Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra during a private tour of Stonestreet Farms; a private tour of Old Friends with founder Michael Blowen; and a private tour of historic Darby Dan Farm, to mention only a few.

To take part in Saturday’s activities at Churchill Downs, you can start by buying tickets that will donate $5 to the aftercare organization of your choice. Options include the Secretariat Center, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, Friends of Ferdinand, Thoroughbred Charities of America, Kentucky Equine Adoption Center, Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, New Vocations, Old Friends, and Second Stride.

Thanks to Second Stride, the mother of 2022 Kentucky Derby upsetter Rich Strike, Gold Strike, will be at Churchill to welcome visitors – and receive treats you can pick up from the Horse Snack Station!

Gold Strike was a champion herself in Canada, as the 2005 Woodbine Oaks winner and third-placer versus males in the Queen’s Plate. Gold Strike also foaled Grade 2 victress Llanarmon, who was third in the 2014 Woodbine Oaks, and she appears as the maternal grandmother (second dam) of millionaire Neecie Marie.

Another way to express support is to write a note, or younger fans might want to draw a picture, in honor of our retired racehorses. Reflecting on your memories of the horses who meant the most to you, imagine what you might say to them now!

Whether at Churchill Downs or through online donations, you can make a difference to help our Thoroughbreds enjoy fulfilling lives after the racetrack.
