Daddy Unbeaten as DQ Continues Control
The second round of the 2016 $20,000 bestbet Sprint Classic took place on Friday evening, and to say that it was an open affair would be an understatement. The DQ Williams Kennel was the only one to win more than one race, they won two, and Hey Hey Daddy was the only first round winner to repeat. Several former stakes finalists and favorites got back to their winning ways, and like more rounds, there were a couple of wildcards thrown in as well.
As we said Hey Hey Daddy came to run again in the 13th race on the card. Breaking close, he chased the pace throughout and gained ground the on the early leaders, Cj’s Sadie and Kc’s Todd. By the far turn he had shrunk the lead to almost nothing, and in the stretch he split the leaders late to drive home for back to back wins. Second was first round winner Ww’s Gypsumclear, who also came from off the pace, third was Kc’s Todd and the early leader Cj’s Sadie faded back for fourth.
Real Good Feelin was the other winner for DQ and she just happens to be the sister for Hey Hey Daddy. Like her sister she is a closer by nature and had to use those chomps in this race to get the job done. Breaking just behind the fast rushing threat Jilian Of Ruckus, Real Good Feelin was too close too soon not to post up a W in this effort. Taking over in the far turn, she raced away late for the rest of the field and stopped the clock at an impressive 30.39 4 length romp in race 9 on the card. Jilian was 2nd, followed by Boc’s Andross in 3rd and Cbj Sassafras in 4th.
The biggest effort of the evening came from an unexpected place. Mac’s Melanie broke in the pack, but found a lane to rush in and took control of the 2nd race from almost the start. Rushing hard she stole away a couple of lengths early on, but that number was only going to increase in the open air up front. Pushing the lead away with every step she took, she was all alone by the time she hit the far turn and she just kept on running to the wire. Crossing the line almost 7 lengths ahead of her nearest competitor, she blistered the trail in 30.24 seconds, the fastest on the card. Next best was first round winner Kc’s Waltrip, then first round winner Ww’s Sammy, and Blank Spaces won the photo over first round winner Ln Houdini for the final spot in the superfecta.
Puppy stakes winner Pullanallnighter and crowd favorite Charlie Bale both got back on track and took home wins as well in round 2 of the stakes. Although they got the same results, the method in which they won could not have been more different. Pullanallnighter exploded from the starting box and took over instant command of the 7th race on the card. She dashed away early and took a 3 length lead down the backside. By the far turn she stretch that lead to 4 and would need all she could to get home a winner. Coasting late, her lead shrank, but she still easily took the flag at the wire to secure her 19 points. Winning in a speedy 30.39 romp, she looked as though she is back in contention in this stakes. Second was The closing Lee Tuco, third was Pat C Dashboard, and fourth was Ww’s Cecilia. Charlie Bale came about his win in just a bit of a different manner. Closing is the name of Charlie’s Game and he did it in impressive fashion in this effort. Breaking to the front in race 4 was last year’s winner Cj’s Colin. Tonight he came to run and burst from the box to seize control of this effort. The problem was that Charlie was not last at the turn, he was 5th, and even though he was still about 8 lengths back, it was not going to be enough of a lead for Colin to win. Pushing the pace to the far turn, Colin still clung to his 2 length lead over the chasing Skyscraper, but Charlie was 3rd by about 5 and was starting to make his move. Down the stretch. Colin gave his all, but Charlie looked like a bullet train headed home. Totally focused on running, he shifted gears, hit the NOS and left everyone back in his final few strides. Winning by 2.5 lengths, or making up 7.5 from the far turn, Charlie also made a statement in this effort. Colin settles for second, Skyscraper was 3rd, and Leila Of Ruckus was 4th.
The others winners on the card was Ww’s Lost Girl in the 10th, Idaho Kinky in the 11th, and Easi Charlie in the 12th. Lost Girl found her break in this effort and posted up an impressive box to wire 2 length win over Ln J Co, Flying Bass, and Js Great Escape as she stopped the clock at 30.51 seconds. Idaho Kinky had to work a little bit harder and be a little bit luckier to get home a winner in his round. Early leader Sunday Funday collided wide in the 1st turn, but continued around the turn on the lead. Kinky slipped by on the rail and come out smelling like a rose right behind the leader up the backside. Hitting the pedal in the stretch, he drove by in time to score the win at the wire over Sunday Funday, Kc’s Tess, and Sheezsohot. Easi Charlie also got some help in the far turn, but it probably didn’t matter anyways. Breaking with the leaders, she forced the pace, along with several others to the far turn, but that is where it got interesting. The leaders bunched up with each other, she took over, and dug in deep in the final few strides to cash in at the wire. The closing Pat C Outbounds was 2nd, followed by first round winner Hey Pretty Baby, who came from last, in 3rd, and O Ya Charger in 4th.
The third round of the stakes runs on Monday Evening July 25th at bestbet Jacksonville. The field will be trimmed down to 4 races and only the best of the best move on. Plan on joining us as some of the best greyhounds in the country lock up for battle once again in the bestbet Sprint Classic.
