Danzing Candy, Uncle Lino work for San Felipe

Danzing Candy and Uncle Lino, two contenders for the $400,000 San Felipe (G2) at 1 1/16 miles on March 12, worked over Santa Anita’s fast main track Saturday for the race, a major steppingstone to the $1 million Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 9.

Danzing Candy went five furlongs in 1:00.20, while Uncle Lino clocked a half-mile in :47.80 with Fernando Perez up for trainer Gary Sherlock.

Danzing Candy is currently 3-2-0-0 after romping by 5 3/4 lengths in a one-mile allowance/optional claimer on February 4 at Santa Anita.

“It was a perfect work,” said Danzing Candy’s trainer, Cliff Sise Jr. “He just galloped. Mike was very happy with him.”

Sise was speaking of jockey Mike Smith, who was aboard for Danzing Candy’s maiden and optional claiming victories and retains the mount in the San Felipe.

Uncle Lino, a game second behind odds-on favorite Mor Spirit in the Robert B. Lewis (G3) on February 6, impressed trainer Gary Sherlock.

“It was probably the best work he’s ever had by himself,” Sherlock said.
