Del Mar to host additional stakes during expanded fall meet

August 26th, 2015

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on Wednesday announced the stakes schedule for its second annual "Bing Crosby" fall meet, which runs 20 days from October 29 through November 29.

Because the meet is five days, or one week, longer than in 2014, Del Mar has "borrowed" several stakes that were contested at the Santa Anita fall meet in 2014. This one-year arrangement means Del Mar will play host to the Goldikova (G2), a one-mile turf race for fillies and mares on November 1, as well as the Golden State Juvenile on October 30 and Golden State Juvenile Fillies on October 29. All three races carry a purse of $200,000.

Most of the meet's highlights will fall on Thanksgiving week. On the holiday itself, November 26, the feature will be the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup (G2) over 1 1/2 miles, while the main event on the November 27 card is the $250,000 Seabiscuit H. (G2) over 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

The November 28 program is highlighted by the $300,000 Hollywood Derby (G1) at nine furlongs on the turf, won last year by eventual Horse of the Year California Chrome. The supporting stakes include the $150,000 Native Diver H. (G3) for older horses at 1 1/8 miles and the $100,000 Jimmy Durante (G3) for juvenile turf fillies.

The closing day feature is the $300,000 Matriarch (G1) for fillies and mares at a mile on the turf, with the undercard including the $100,000 Cecil B. DeMille (G3) for juvenile turf runners.

Also among the 10 graded stakes are the $100,000 Bob Hope (G3) for two-year-olds going seven furlongs on November 14 and the $100,000 Red Carpet (G3), a 1 3/8-mile turf race for fillies and mares on November 21.

In all, 17 stakes will be offered for a total of $2.7 million in purse money.

Post time for each day of the Bing Crosby meet will be 12:30 p.m. (PT) with the exception of Thanksgiving, when first post will be 11 a.m.
