Delaware Track Update for May 25

May 25th, 2021

Delaware Park opens its racing season this Wednesday, May 26! They run a long meet, all the way from late May through early autumn, as the meet closes on Oct. 16. Let's find out who to watch!

Jockeys

Jockey Carol Cedeno has dominated Delaware Park; she's won three riding titles in a row, and six total. She dominated last year, as usual: 80 wins in 411 starts (19%), putting her 22 victories clear of Alexander Crispin. Her in-the-money rate of 53% (216-for-411) put her among the top as well; among the most regular riders in the colony, only Jaime Rodriguez (159-for-297, 54% ITM) was higher.

In grass races, Angel Suarez shined last year. He was 14-for-68 (21%) on the lawn, the runaway leading turf rider at the Delaware meet. He could win at a price, too, returning a +$2.88 flat-bet ROI in grass races at Delaware last year!

Trainers

On the trainer side, Jamie Ness was the leading trainer at Delaware Park last year with 52 wins from 221 starts (24%). That had him 30 wins clear of second-place Mac Robertson (22-for-109, 20%).

Anthony Pecoraro was third in the win standings last year despite having far fewer starts than the trainers ahead of him. He won 19 times from just 69 starts (28%), and hit the board with 40 of them (58%).

Looking specifically at turf races? It was tight at the top among trainers, with Mac Robertson leading with six grass wins (6-for-29, 21%), Richard Hendriks (5-for-15, 33%) and Mike Stidham (5-for-18, 28%) just behind. Hendriks is particularly worth noting. All of those winners were price horses, ranging from 4.7-1 to 18.1-1, and his turf runners at Delaware last year returned a head-turning +$6.58 ROI as a result.

Horatio DePaz didn't start many horses on the Delaware turf last year, but he made them count. He had three wins from just four turf starts, so watch out.
