Distaffers Highlight Tuesday Cards at Dover Downs and Rosecroft

March 22nd, 2017

Tuesday evening has developed into "ladies night" in the Mid-Atlantic Region over the past year as a pair of five-eighths mile harness racing ovals highlight the pacing fillies and mares on that night.

On Tuesday evening at Rosecroft Raceway, Delaware invader Apple Bottom Jeans (Steve Nason) delivered the best performance of the night at either venue when she overcame post eight to gain command before a 26-second opener, rolled by the midway mark in 54 flat, shook loose of any pursuers down the backside and by three-quarters in 1:21.3 then romped home four lengths clear in hand in 1:50.3.

A four-year-old daughter of Mr Apples trained by Kevin Switzer for owner-breeder Kdk Standardbreds, Apple Bottom Jeans notched her second win in four starts this year and now sports an 11-9-1 slate and $338,000 bankroll from 26 career tries. She had been third as the 4-5 choice against upper-level conditioned foes at Yonkers Raceway 11 days earlier and had little trouble with her older rivals in her local debut, establishing a new, all-age track record for pacing fillies and mares.

Just prior to the midway point of the card, Lyonssweetie (Jared Moyer) lived up to her role as the even-money choice in a non-winners of $2,500 last five starts class for pacing fillies and mares when she gained command in a 28.2 opener, got a breather by the half in 58.4 and held safe the pocket-sitting Proud Maryet (David Hill, III) to score in 1:55.4. A seven-year-old No Pan Intended mare owned and trained by George "Ronnie" Leager, Lyonssweetie prevailed in her seasonal debut and now owns an 18-24-19 slate and $167,000 bankroll from 128 career tries.
Two races earlier in a non-winners of one event for pacing fillies and mares, Hybrid Heidi (Brian Burton) led throughout in serious fractions of 26.4, 56.2 and 1:24.4 en route to an eight-length victory in 1:55 in her sophomore debut. A three-year-old daughter of Cam's Card Shark owned, bred and trained by Richard Hans of Goo Goo Gaa Gaa fame, Hybrid Heidi notched her first career score from three tries two weeks after displaying plenty of ability in a 1:56.3 qualifying score.

One race earlier in the opener, Diva Demands (Moyer) overcame a prolonged first over journey to prevail in her seasonal debut in 1:55.2 in a non-winners of three races or $10,000 lifetime class for pacing fillies and mares. A sophomore daughter of Roddy's Bags Again owned and trained by Leager, Diva Demands lowered her lifetime mark by nearly three full seconds as she recorded her second win in eight career tries, pushing her earnings past $18,000.

Perhaps the most promising performance of the evening at Rosecroft occurred in a qualifier prior to the parimutuel program. Secret Zette (Hill), a completely unraced daughter of Hambletonian hero Donato Hanover, led through honest fractions of 30, 1:01 and 1:30 and then drew clear to a 15-length score in 1:59.2 in her first qualifier anywhere. Owned and trained by Gary White, who purchased the sophomore trotting filly for $7,500 at the Meadowlands sale, Secret Zette displayed exceptionally precocious ability in her debut qualifier and may be worth 20 times what her current owner-trainer recently paid.

That same evening at Dover Downs, Dismissal (Corey Callahan) turned the tables on Barbara's Shadow (Victor Kirby) in another battle in that ongoing series of slugfests in the non-winners of $100,001 lifetime class for pacing fillies and mares. Dismissal prevailed as the tepid even-money favorite in 1:52, ending Barbara's Shadow's brief reign in the class although onlookers can expect another showdown to transpire next week in this event.
