Diverse group of fillies entered in Del Mar’s Sorrento

Only one in the bunch, Gomo, has stretched out past 5 1/2 furlongs. That filly broke her maiden going a mile at Santa Anita Park, but she did so over the turf course. Her first start, which came at five furlongs on the main track, resulted in a third-place finish. Mario Gutierrez was aboard for both those efforts and retains the mount.
The Sorrento also features a pair of stakes winners in Right There and Stays in Vegas.
Right There finished second in her career bow in May for trainer Keith Desormeaux, then returned one month later in the Landaluce S. The dark bay miss came four wide into the stretch of that contest, took command in the lane and pulled away for a 4 3/4-length score under Kent Desormeaux, who will be back in the saddle for the Sorrento.
Stays in Vegas debuted on Independence Day in the Juan Gonzalez Memorial S. at Pleasanton and overcame being squeezed at the start to rally for a six-length victory. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer will give jockey Rafael Bejarano a leg up Wednesday.
The rest of the Sorrento hopefuls own first-out maiden wins, including Pretty N Cool and Sooner Time.
Pretty N Cool romped in her initial try at Del Mar on July 19, scoring by 4 1/2 front-running lengths. That was enough for the Bob Baffert pupil to earn a field-best 95 BRIS Speed rating and rank first in BRIS Prime Power. Martin Garcia has the call as Pretty N Cool faces winners for the first time.
Sooner Time also scored at Del Mar, but her race came against maiden claiming rivals. The chestnut filly’s claim to fame at this point is being the first winner for her sire, Grade 1-winning millionaire Sidney’s Candy. Corey Nakatani takes the reins for trainer Peter Eurton.
Undisputed and One True Kiss both broke their maidens at Los Alamitos, and Uptown Twirl enters the Sorrento off a half-length debut win at Santa Anita on June 18.
