Dolphus under consideration for Lecomte

High-profile sophomore Dolphus, a half-brother to Horse of the Year and Preakness S. (G1) winner Rachel Alexandra, is possible for the $200,000 Lecomte S. (G3) on January 16 at Fair Grounds, according to trainer Joe Sharp.
The Dede McGehee homebred won at six furlongs in his November 22 debut on the opening weekend of Fair Grounds. He followed that effort with a game third against winners at the Lecomte’s mile and 70-yard trip on December 18.
Dolphus worked toward his possible stakes debut with a half-mile drill on Saturday in :50.40 at the New Orleans track.
“He had a great work yesterday and has been training well,” Sharp said. “He’s doing better than he did before his last race and the ‘a -other-than’ didn’t fill, so we may go to the Lecomte with him. It depends on how it shapes up.
“My personal vote would be to run,” Sharp admitted. “We’ve always had that race in our minds and he gained a ton out of his last race. He physically looks more athletic and is starting to lose that baby fat and look like an older horse.”
If he competes, the chestnut son of Lookin at Lucky will likely face the two foes who finished ahead of him last out – the Mike Stidham-trained Pinnacle Peak and Dallas Stewart-conditioned Tom’s Ready.
Pinnacle Peak won their last outing by a quarter-length over Tom’s Ready, who in turn had 3 3/4 lengths to spare on Dolphus.
That duo also worked four furlongs on Saturday at Fair Grounds, with Pinnacle Peak clocking :50.20 and Tom’s Ready recording a time of :49. There were 111 workers at that distance on Saturday at Fair Grounds.
