Dover Downs Kicks Off Fall Meet on Monday
While many youngsters across the country will head out Monday evening looking for various treats on Halloween, standardbred racing enthusiasts will keenly focus on Dover Downs as the Delaware five-eighths mile oval will kick off its extended fall-spring meet.
Dover Downs will offer a bevy of lucrative stakes throughout the fall portion of the meet, but the feature on Mondays card is the $30,000 Open/Preferred Handicap for aged pacers.
Dover Downs will offer a bevy of lucrative stakes throughout the fall portion of the meet, but the feature on Mondays card is the $30,000 Open/Preferred Handicap for aged pacers.
Highlighting the Monday feature is Mel Mara (Corey Callahan), the talented Dylan Davis trainee who was rightly assigned the outside slot in the field of six. Mel Mara has faced many of the best pacers in the land on numerous occasions, including Wiggle It Jiggleit and Always B Miki, the sports two best older pacers. Mel Mara even owns a win over Always B Miki, hero of last Friday's $420,000 Breeders Crown Open at the Meadowlands in 1:49 by a length over 'Wiggle It'.
Mel Mara could get another chance at Wiggle It Jiggleit in the $100,000 Free State Free-For-All at Rosecroft Raceway on Tuesday, November 22. The race has been tentatively added to the Rosecroft fall calendar and would be the tracks most anticipated race in over 20 years if it comes together and attracts 'Wiggle It', Mel Mara and one horse each from the stables of Ron Burke, Jeff Bamond, Rene Allard and Peter Tritton.
