Dover Downs Monday card offers upsets
One day after its Sunday program was nixed by the snowstorm that enveloped most of the Mid-Atlantic region, Dover Downs offered a solid Monday card that had more than its fair share of upsets.
Nearing the midway point of the card, Soto (Victor Kirby) benefited from a pocket trip and overhauled 2-5 favorite Special T Rocks (Allan Davis) to capture a non-winners of $12,000 last six starts class in 1:51.4. It was the second win in four starts this year for the Eric Ell trainee.
One race later in the $27,500 Delaware Special Handicap, Mustang Art benefited from a perfect pocket trip and out kicked Captive Audience, who raced well second over and 4-5 choice Just A Jolt to score by nearly a length in 1:52. It was the second win in four starts this year for the pacer trained by Jim McGuire.
Then two races later in the $30,000 Open/Preferred Handicap for older pacers where Meadowlands invader Bushwacker was made the 1-5 favorite, Dapper Dude (Kirby) saved ground early and rallied late for a 14-1 upset in 1:51. Now trained by Jim King, jr., the former Bob McIntosh trainee handed Bushwacker his first setback of 2016.
Then one race later in the winners over class for pacers, Little Ben overcame a tough first over trip by pacing his back half in 54.2 to score in 1:51.2 for King.
One race after war it was Rocknroll Jewell (Yannick Gingras) who remained perfect on the season when he gained command early and edged clear late to score by three lengths in 1:51.2. Trained by Dylan Davis, Rocknroll Jewell has won all four of his starts this year and has dominated the $25,000 claimers at the Delaware oval.
One race later it was Roll Big (Corey Callahan) who displayed plenty of early speed and some late grittiness to capture a non-winners of $50,000 lifetime class in 1:52.2. Owned and trained by John Baxter of Hot Art fame, Roll Big has won all three of his starts this year.
One race later on the card, Class Six (Gingras) continued his dominant ways by capturing a non-winners of $80,001 lifetime class in 1:51. Trained by Ron Burke, Class Six has won all four of his starts this year and looks poised to join the Open ranks this spring.
Then in the finale, Sentencing Memo (Russell Foster) continued the unbeaten start to his career when he rallied inside late to prevail in 1:53 in non-winners of five races lifetime class. Trained by Arty Foster of Arion Lobell and Imp Hanover fame, Sentencing Memo notched his third straight win to start the season and has now won all five of his lifetime outings.
