Favorites were hot in final week of Los Alamitos meet

There was no graded racing at Los Alamitos last week.

Track Stats

From a total of 34 races held over the Southern California racetrack during the past week, favorites won at a 44 percent clip and the top two betting choices combined for 70 percent of the wins. From 34 frays contested on the dirt, four animals won in wire-to-wire fashion (12 percent).

Early speed had no edge this week, especially during the first three days of the racing stanza. From Thursday through Saturday, just two winners led at every call and 21 of the 25 winners broke from outside of post three. The outer paths and post positions were best.

HORSES TO WATCH

Thursday (4/28)

3RD – LOB CITY (Temple City) took command approaching the turn for home and came home a nice winner for conditioner Craig Dollase. The four-year-old filly might be a player next out in a first run with winners.

5TH – SPIRIT WORLD (Ghostzapper) got overtaken near mid-stretch but fought all the way to the wire in posting a sharp runner-up performance. The gelded four-year-old was more than 14 lengths clear of third and could easily graduate next time with any improvement.

Friday (4/29)

1ST – DUTT BART (Empire Way) swept to the front turning for home and came home a sharp winner at first asking for conditioner Mike Harrington. The juvenile colt could have a nice future and will likely be stakes bound before long.

Saturday (4/30)

7TH – DROVER CRAZY (Cowtown Cat) moved to the fore in the lane and just missed in a first run since the Del Mar meeting. The six-year-old gelding should use this as a nice steppingstone to the second half of 2016 for Craig Dollase.

8TH – RARE CANDY (Twirling Candy) forced the pace from the outset and held on to be a very good second behind a nice one in this stakes spot. The gelded sophomore finished more than five lengths clear of third and we will give this one a long look right back if properly placed by trainer David Hoffmans.

9TH – STORMIN EAGLE (Stormin Fever) got off slowly but closed with a big rush in a superb debut maiden run for conditioner Bob Baffert. The sophomore colt was well clear at the finish in posting a sharp final time, and he could be a nice prospect g9oing forward.

Sunday (5/1)

5TH – Baffert’s FANTASY OF LUCK (Lucky Pulpit) took the lead nearing the top of the lane and left no doubt en route to a strong maiden win beneath Rafael Bejarano. The three-year-old filly should factor next time out with something of this nature.
