Fillies And Colts’ Sires Stakes Fields Thick With Possible Champion Competition

Hambletonian Oaks hopefuls (e) in Pennsylvania Sires Stakes (PASS) and PASS colts are loaded with eligible horses on the Trail this weekend. The PASS for the fillies begins the parade at Philly on May 10. Four divisions lift off on the afternoon card. In division one ($42,601), the public choice may be Wildfire Seelster, but she is not one of four eligible for the “Oaks.” Among that quartet, Jim Campbell’s Millies Possesion (e) should be flying mid-race to a sharp win, her second at three. Another $42,601 is on the line for fillies next and another Campbell prospect looks stellar—Jazzy Fashion (e). She should offer fair odds considering her top foes Rush Lane (e), Asiago (e) and Matter Of Fact (e). The other eligible, Brett Pelling’s Ma Was Right (e) is in her debut at three. The third PASS for fillies ($42,201) is a field of six, all with Oaks promise, three opening their seasons here. Nancy Johansson’s Fraulein Blucher (e) is off to a good start, though not as good as Sweet Madam (e), who has won for of eight. We give a nod to Zan Kaiser’s Southwind Casa (e). This is only her fourth race at three and she is posting hot figures. The crowd won’t back a Kaiser filly over the brand trainers’ stock here, including a debut from Ave Svanstedt’s Personal Paradise. Philly fillies ends the PASS parade with a $42,601 field of seven, four looking to August. Of those, Marcus Melander’s oddly named Mimi’spearloflindy could be the real thing. She is from an Oaks winner and had a promising start, a place, as she goes into her second race with fine handling from Melander as trainer and driver. Saturday, May 11, we head to the Meadows for PASS colts afternoon action. Three lucrative miles for the glamour-boy trotters are on tap. First is an eight-colt field worth $57,267. It’s new ground at three for Demon Onthe Hill (e) and Ginger Tree Skyr (e). The crowd will dismiss them for Burke’s Capt Chaps Hanover, surely to be bet too much for our blood. We like Whirl Winds K (e), who won the Dexter Cup elim and has a good chance to win at a good price. For $56,867 in the second PASS colt mile, Osterc (e), Dexter Cup winner, should eat up all the win bets. Going against him is tough but necessary for a price that will be good enough to support. That colt is HL Revadon (e). Though he has not won in six starts at three, he comes out of the “Dexter,” and may get a trip good enough to beat Osterc. The Dexter is a key race for us in the first two PASS colt events here. Burke’s Go Down Smooth will be the favorite here but is way too obvious for our betting blood. We have been partial to Trond Smedshammer’s Chiplosive (e) from the start of his soph season and like the idea of getting a decent price for him as a second or third choice for the public.
