Fort Erie track update: Sept. 13

September 13th, 2021

The second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Prince of Wales S., highlights the Fort Erie card for Tuesday, Sept. 14.

Between that and the fact that there is still more than a month of racing to go in southeast Ontario, let's check in on some of the trends and angles at the Fort!

Jockeys

Christopher Husbands shines atop the riding standings at Fort Erie this year. He heads into the week with 41 wins (138 starts, 30%), more than twice as many as his closest competitors, Juan Crawford (19 wins, 113 starts, 17%), Helen Marie Vanek (18 wins, 64 starts, 28%), and Sunny Singh (17 wins, 108 starts, 16%).

Husbands also shines from a betting perspective. Unlike any of the other regular riders, he has a positive flat-bet ROI, +34%, at the meet.

Looking more closely, most of those returns for Husbands have been in turf sprints. He has 10 wins from 29 starts (34%), with a +89% ROI, in those races. Also worth watching in turf sprints are Ademar Santos (five wins, 19 starts, 26%, +34% ROI) and Vanek (four wins, nine starts, 44%, +78% ROI).

Though Fort Erie does not run as many turf routes, Juan Crawford (two wins, nine starts, +83% ROI) has performed well when he gets that chance.

Trainers

Last year's Fort Erie training champion, Julie Mathes (17 wins, 78 starts, 22%), has a healthy lead in the training standings, five wins ahead of Joseph Humber (12 wins, 107 starts, 11%).

Mathes has been particularly bettable on turf. Her win percentage is the same (six wins, 27 starts, 22%), with a +90% ROI.

Paula Loescher has also been worth a long look on the grass. She has three wins from 15 starts (20%), with a +73% ROI, on the lawn. Nine of her 15 (60%) runners on grass has finished in the top three.

Off the claim, ignore Michael Cohen at your own peril. He has three runners first off the claim at Fort Erie this meet and all won. Cohen has also been very strong on dirt. He has six wins from 10 starts (60%) on the main, with all starts in sprints, and a +64% ROI.
