Greyhound Preview: Southland for 4/4/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
Tonight's card will be full of exciting races as it features the first round of the 2014 Southland Spring Futurity stakes racing with 9 races of greyhounds vying for the title.
Race 2 - This race is a grade D race over the 660 yard course and a race where the (7) Surf About should come out early and hold on for the win. In her last race she came out first from the same box as she is in tonight but had much trouble on the first turn, I don't see that happening here however and I like her to go box to wire. The (4) CT Chris is a Palm Beach invader who was 7 of 8 in the tri there before coming to Southland and who was the beaten favorite last time out at this distance but more then capable of a big run here. The (1) AMF Set The Tone is a double drop and though not in the best box for her still a threat for the tri and superfecta plays. The (2) Braska Reason will challenge for the lead early and could be the surprise of the race.
Pick: 7 - 4 - 1 - 2
Race 4 - This B grade race over the 583 yard course features a tough field but I like the (1) AMF Rap Singer as he loves the one box and has been a solid A/AA grade runner over the past several months and should get back on the winning track this evening. Coming off an impressive 9 length win last time out is the (4) Bold Deceiver and though she might not repeat that kind of win here, she is very capable of being in the chase at the finish. Not to be outdone, breaking from the (9) box is PJ ReasonImBroke is coming off a 10 length win and deserves at least some consideration in trying to make it two wins in a row. Also worth a look is the (8) Mega Wily who was off for a month and in her only schooling race back went box to wire.
Pick: 1 - 4 - 9 - 8
Race 5 - This SAA grade race is one of the Spring Futurity challenge races and I'm going with the (5) Slatex Taos. This young talented greyhound only took 7 races to go from Grade M to Grade A and in the 10 races since then, he was won 3 times and finished second once. I look for him to continue his winning ways here. The (2) RCK Fantasia likes to run mid to wide but don't overlook the fact that of his 25 races, 5 of his wins have come from the 1 or 2 box. In the chase as well will be the (1) SE'S High Noon who likes the inside and was the favorite in the one box last time but encountered much trouble on the turns, I think he avoids the bumps this time and gives a great effort. Finishing out for those of you who play the superfectas, I like the wide running (8) Gorejust.
Pick: 5 - 2 - 1 - 8
Race 11 - Here is another SAA grade race in the 2014 Spring Futurity stakes challenge and it featues the outstanding greyhound (3) Slatex Titanium. Since starting his career at Southland he has won 14 of 20 races which included winning his first 7 races in a row of which 1 was a grade A effort and 2 wins in AA before the streak came to an end. In the chase for 2nd place will be the (1) Dexter Ambigram and the (2) Distant Days. Rounding out the ticket I like the (7) Stilgar.
Pick: 3 - 1 - 2 - 7
Tonight's Moneymaker play is the 13th race, another SAA grade race in the 2014 Spring Futurity stakes over the 583 yard course and is the (2) Beryl Drum. This young greyhound has never had the 1 or 2 box in his 13 races and though his post position may work against him as his running style is mid to wide, in this race I still like him to avoid early trouble and be flying at the end. Thanks for reading and good luck to all.
