Greyhound Preview: Southland for 5/17/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
Another exciting Saturday night at Southland with a full slate of races where the greyhounds display their talents and their blazing speed over three different courses. Included in this evening's contests is an always entertaining super marathon race. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.
Race 4 - Grade D - 703 yards - The key here will be the rail running (1) VJ Mysterious. She has a ton of early speed, likes the inside and should be the frontrunner right out of the box. She does have a tendency to run out of steam down the stretch but I believe she gets a big enough lead to hold on for the win here but I will key her in quinielas just in case. The (8) Pink Cadillac likes it mid-track and will also be out fast and challenging early for the lead. Finishing out the ticket I will go with the late closing (3) Shaydid and the (5) C Ville Wiggins.
Picks: 1 - 8 - 3 - 5
Race 6 - Grade A - 583 yards - A tough field of talented greyhounds indeed and I'm going with the (6) WW's Dove Call who won the 2014 Southland Futurity stakes challenge just a few weeks ago. She will looking for the lead right out of the box and once she gets it, she's tough to beat. Another talented runner is the (1) Flying Riot who loves the one box. He has five wins, two seconds and a fourth place finish in eight races from this box. The (8) Boc's Steelforce likes it mid to wide and is posted well to make a bid should the leaders have any trouble early. I will also use on the ticket the (2) Callum.
Picks: 6 - 1 - 8 - 2
Race 10 - Grade D - 583 yards - I'm going with the young and impressive pup the (2) Klutch. He likes the inside, has a good rush and is also capable of a strong late drive, the one to beat here. The (4) Desperado has shown good effort lately and has the class to get it done here. The (9) Eye Pleasing is a transfer from the Naples track and seems to be adjusting well to the Southland surface as evidenced by his second and third place finishes in his two official starts here. The (3) L's Wesco will complete my tri and superfecta plays.
Picks: 2 - 4 - 9 - 3
Race 17 - Grade TAA - 820 yards - In this super marathon race I like the (3) Flying Smokey to make it three wins in his last four starts on this course as he will be out fast and ready to romp. Also a factor will be the (5) Gracie Of Ruckus who is going for her third straight win and fourth out of her last six contests. It should be one heck of an exciting battle between these two going paw to paw in the quest for the win. I won't overlook either the (2) Flying Uzi who is capable of a big run or the (8) Marble Arch who may just avoid early trouble and be in position to make a challenge down the stretch.
Picks: 3 - 5 - 2 - 8
This evening's Moneymaker pick is in the 1st race, a grade D contest over the 660 yard distance and I'm going with the (2) PJ Inthemoney. This greyhound earlier this season won a grade B race over this course so even though he may not have the best starting spot, he is more than capable of pulling the upset here and well worth giving a shot at.
