Greyhound Preview: Southland for 6/12/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
Thursday evening's Southland card of 18 exciting races is highlighted by the 2nd round of the 2014 Southland Derby stakes contest in which we will see 9 races of stakes racing over the 583 yard course. I have included three of those contests in the picks below.
Race 3 - Grade M - 583 yards - I'm coming right with the (8) PJ Confession as the key in this race as she encountered much trouble last time out. She likes it wide and will be flying down the stretch and be just in time to get the win. I also like the (4) Famous Jameis to be in the chase as he has given a good effort in his two schooling contests and in his one official race. Finishing out the tri and superfecta plays I will use the (1) Ally Geishan and the (6) TK Rock Of Ages.
Picks: 8 - 4 - 1 - 6
Race 8 - Grade SAA - 583 yards - This is the first of the Southland Derby stakes races that we like this evening and I'm using the (2) Kebo Bellagio as the one to beat. He can run mid-track or inside and with his strong rush I believe he gets to the first turn in good shape and turns in on from there. The (6) Beryl Drumm always gets my attention and here is no exception. This talented young pup likes it mid to wide and has 22 out of 28 top four finishes in his young career. He has a strong rush and gives 110% each time out. Completing the ticket I will use the rail running (1) HL's Leo and the (7) Stilgar who will be trying to make it two wins in a row.
Picks: 2 - 6 - 1 - 7
Race 9 - Grade SAA - 583 yards - Here we have the always tough (2) Atascocita Gray going for his 24th win in his last 51 races and his third win in his last five races. Once he gets the lead he is very hard to catch and he must be respected here to do just that. The (4) CBJ Butterfinger will be trying her best to go paw to paw with Gray right out of the box. In her last six races she has three wins and three seconds so with that resume of late I can't overlook her as a possible winner as well. The (7) Flyin Supergiant is capable of both going early and also coming from behind and I will also use the (1) KL's Suede who is a proven strakes racer himself.
Picks: 2 - 4 - 7 - 1
Race 16 - Grade SAA - 583 yards - Here we have the multi talented (6) Flying Titanium who is my early favorite to be the winner of the 2014 Southland Derby. He is going for his fourth straight win and his sixth win in his last seven races and I believe he gets it done. The (7) Branding Iron will be battling hard however and can't be overlooked. This young pup has 20 top four finishes in 23 races this season and has wins over both the short and long courses so he must be in the play here. I will also include for tri and superfecta plays both the (3) CBJ Irish Cream and the (1) Flying Disciple.
Picks: 6 - 7 - 3 - 1
The Moneymaker play this evening is in the 7th race, a grade AA contest over the 583 yard course and is the (8) Volando Dilbert. This greyhound came to Southland from the Caliente track where he was 8 out of 9 in the tri and since arriving here has 10 top four finishes in 13 races including two wins and six second place finishes and with his good rush he's worth a play here.
