Greyhound Preview: Southland for 6/14/2014

June 14th, 2014

by Moneymaker Mike

Saturday evening at the Southland track features 18 races loaded with talented veteran greyhounds and several young pups who show a lot of potential. With that in mind for the picks this evening I have selected two maiden and two AA contests that I feel offer good wagering opportunites. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 3 - Grade M - 583 yards - The pick here is the (7) PJ Refined who shows two schooling wins including a dazzling 21 and 1/2 length romp in one of them. She has a strong rush and appears to like it mid to wide so even though this is her first official start this young pup seems to have a ton of talent. I will also include the (2) Slatex Daytona as a big threat as he is coming of a nice second place finish last time out and he likes the inside. To finish out the tri and superfecta plays I will use the (5) White Night and the (1) PJ Superior.

Picks: 7 - 2 - 5 - 1

Race 9 - Grade M - 583 yards - I'm going with the (8) Par Demander as the key here. He has a good rush and a decent closing ability and is posted well for what seems to be his mid-track running style. Also in the chase will be the (2) Flying Paxil who has shown nice early speed in previous schooling races and could be vying for the lead right out of the box. I can't overlook the (1) Bravo Leader even though his last two races have been last place finishes, before that he had been running hard as evidenced by two second and two third place efforts. The (6) RCK Azalea will complete the play.

Picks: 8 - 2 - 1 - 6

Race 11 - Grade AA - 660 yards - Going with the (6) Smokey Joe to be the key in this race. He has adjusted well to the Southland track after coming back here from Palm Beach. He is a member of the 2013 All-American team as well as a proven stakes winner and is the one to beat here. The (1) PJ You Ask Why is going for his second win in a row and the (2) Slatex Plutonium can go early or close late and I will use both of these greyhounds to be in the chase. Finishing the tri and superfecta plays I have to go with the (5) State Of Art who likes it mid-track and may clear early.

Picks: 6 - 1 - 2 - 5

Race 14 - Grade AA - 660 yards - I like the (5) Deacon Clayborne here. He has good early speed, likes it wide and is going for his fourth win in his last seven races over this distance including two wins in the recently held Razorback Classic stakes races. Also a threat to get the win is the (1) Flying Zinc who is also going for her fourth win in seven races since arriving here from Palm Beach. These two should battle to the wire and should there be any trouble among the leaders, I will include both the (7) Barts Hammerdown and the (3) WW Blazin Spirit  as they are both capable of big efforts.

Picks: 5 - 1 - 7 - 3

The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 10th race and is a grade B contest over the 583 yard course and the choice here is the (2) KB's Rocket City. Over his career at Southland he has been mostly a solid grade A greyhound, he likes the inside and this is only the second time in the last six weeks where he has drawn the one or two box and he shows a win and a second place finish in those. He does have two bad finishes in his last three races but I think the post position gives him the edge here so I'll give him a shot in this one.
