Greyhound Preview: Southland for 6/16/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
The program for Monday at Southland is highlighted by the third round of the 2014 Southland Derby stakes contest. There are six of those races and I've concentrated my picks on three of those as well as a maiden race that drew my attention. We get the card started with a Moneymaker play in the very first race so with that said it is on with the show. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.
Race 3 - Grade M - 583 yards - I'm going with the (1) Famous Jameis to be the key here. He draws the rail, he likes the inside, has a good rush along the backstretch and he has two second place finishes in the first two official races of his very young career so with all that, he's my key. The (5) PJ Confession will be coming from behind and has three top four finishes in six races and also capable of the win. The (8) Flying Sandbar has a good post position for her as she likes it mid-wide and the (3) Nicks Chsn Chkrs shows good early speed so I will use these two to finish out the play.
Picks: 1 - 5 - 8 - 3
Race 7 - Grade SAA - 583 yards - One of the third round Southland Derby races on the evening and I'm going with the (2) Topline Drive to win one at the wire. He likes the inside and will be flying down the stretch as he goes after his second straight stakes win in the 2014 Southland Derby contest. The (4) Kiowa Oriole is more then capable of going paw to paw with him as she has nice early speed and she is also going for her second straight stakes win. I won't overlook the hard running (8) Branding Iron as this talented pup has 21 out of 24 top four finishes and gives a 110% effort each time out. Finishing the ticket I will use the (5) Slatex Taos in case he gets loose early.
Picks: 2 - 4 - 8 - 5
Race 13 - Grade SAA - 583 yards - Another third round Southland Derby race and I like the (6) Flying Titanium to continue his unbeaten streak in the stakes contest with his third straight win and his fifth straight win overall. This talented greyhound in his young career already has 24 wins in 33 races and has speed aplenty and the one to beat here. I will use the hard running (1) Kebo Bellagio to be in the chase as he is running fine here at Southland after running grade A at both Palm Beach and Mardis Gras tracks. Another greyhound who deserves consideration is the (7) Stilgar who is also unbeaten in this stakes contest and who himself is going for three wins in a row. To finish out the tri and superfecta plays I will use the strong closing (3) Ribbet.
Picks: 6 - 1 - 7 - 3
Race 15 - Grade SAA - 583 yards - Also a third round Southland Derby race, the pick here is the (2) Kiowa Producer who has won both of his races in this stakes contest and who is going for his fifth win in his last seven races. He likes the inside and should be the frontrunner here and the one to beat. The (5) Beryl Drumm has a nice rush, likes it mid to wide and can close as well so definitely on my ticket here. The (6) Flying Supergiant is coming off a nice win last time out and also likes it mid-track and may get out in good position early. Finishing the tri and superfecta plays I will include the (7) CBJ Irish Cream who does have good closing ability along with an outside running style.
Picks: 2 - 5 - 6 - 7
The Moneymaker pick for this program is in the very 1st race, a grade D contest over the 583 yard course and is the (8) Mega PennIe. This is a greyhound who came to Southland from the Caliente track showing a resume of 17 top four finishes in 20 races including 8 wins and 4 second place finishes though she hasn't done much at the Southland track to this point. She is however a double drop in class so I am going to give her a shot in D grade since she did have a third place finish in her first race here at Southland several races back. Worth at least a small play here in my opinion.
