Greyhound Preview: Southland for 6/18/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
This evening's Southland card has 18 exciting races on tap and I'm attracted to several contests which have greyhounds trying to continue their winning streaks. With that in mind I have selected a few races in which a greyhound will be going for a third or fourth straight win along with a very young pup trying to make it two in a row. It should be a winning Wednesday for both the greyhounds and the betting public so let's get on with the picks. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.
Race 2 - Grade C - 583 yards - Here we have the (5) Fly Jonah Hill going for his third straight win, he has a strong rush and a late kick as well. He has a mid-track running style and is well posted here to clear early and be the one to catch. I do like the (1) PJ Big Timemoney as he likes the rail and has a win as well as a 2nd and 3rd place finish in his last three races. The (6) JJ's Tip Off is the class of the race and has a decent early rush along with closing ability so I will use him as well as the (7) Cricklewood who has encountered trouble in his last two outings but before that shows four top three finishes in a row.
Pick 5-1-6-7
Race 4 - Grade AA - 583 yards - In this race I'm going with the (8) Alone All Alone who is going for his fourth straight win in this grade and who has a big early rush and a nice closing run if needed. He likes it mid to wide and is well posted to get the job done. Also in the chase should be the (4) Volando Dilbert, the Caliente invader who has adjusted well to the Southland track as evidenced by his 11 top four finishes in 14 races since arriving here. I look for the (3) WW Sparks Flying to have a shot especially if there is any trouble among the frontrunners as he will be coming strong at the wire. To finish the tri and superfecta playes I will include the (7) Flying Taos as he has won the last two times he drew the seven box.
Pick 8-4-3-7
Race 5 - Grade B - 583 yards - I like the (8) Sakkara Me O My as the key in this race as not only does he have 14 top four finishes in 18 races but he loves it wide and having drawn the eight box as a starting position he should be good to go here. I believe both the (5) Kay Kiowa Rocky and the (2) AMF Reset will be battling for the early lead and both have the speed and ability to challenge for the win as well. To complete the ticket I will also use the (7) Mega Gilroy who has had his share of troubles getting around the first turn as of late but should he avoid early trouble he is capable of making a big closing run and with that in mind I can't leave him out on the tri and superfecta plays.
Pick 8-5-2-7
Race 12 - Grade D - 583 yards - In this race we have a very talented young greyhound, the (1) Mr. Shillelagh, who is going for his second straight win after a very impressive start to his career. He won his first schooling race by 12 lengths and followed that up with another schooling win of 6 1/2 lengths and then wins his first official start by another 6 lengths. Some bettors will try to beat him here but I'm going with him to continue his unbeaten streak. The (2) Fly Gold Plated is my second choice as she has a good strong rush and even though she likes it mid to wide she could find herself in good position early to make a run. Finishing out the ticket I will use the (8) Kiowa Juggler and the (4) Marv Cook.
Picks: 1-2-8-4
The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the very 1st race, a grade D contest over the 583 yard course and the pick is the (3) Van Brundt. This young pup has 5 top four finishes in 9 races and may try to go early here. I'm not sure of his running style just yet as he appears to be all over the track at times but the effort appears to be there and with the odds I think he is going to have, worth a small play at least.
