Greyhound Preview: Southland for 6/20/2014

June 20th, 2014

by Moneymaker Mike

The weekend is here and at Southland the greyhounds are ready to get it started with 18 exciting races for this evening. I have selected two higher grade races as well as two lower grade contests for the picks as well as a Moneymaker play that could have you doing an Irish jig. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 4 - Grade D - 583 yards - I am going with the (1) Boc's Bonkers to be the key, she likes the inside and she is coming off two straight races in which she won one and finished second by a half a length in the other. She was off for almost three months but has come back strong and I think she continues her hot streak here. The (3) Bella Illusion is a double drop in grade and could steal the win if she can avoid the early first turn trouble that she has encountered lately. The (9) Kiowa Leah Lee is going for two straight wins and is posted well for her mid to wide running style. Finishing out the tri and superfecta plays I will the (5) KB's Power Punch.

Pick 1-3-9-5

Race 11 - Grade AA - 660 yards - A strong field in this contest but the choice here is the (6) Smokey Joe to make it two wins a row from the same six box he went box to wire from last time out. He has quite a few capable challengers in this contest and should he encounter any early trouble, the (1) Deacon Clayborne would be next in line for the win. He is going for his fourth win in his last seven races so he can't be overlooked, especially after his fine showing in the recent Razorback stakes challenge. I will include both the (3) WW Blazin Spirit and the (7) Barts Hammerdown in the tri and superfecta plays as both of these fine greyhounds have shown their abilities over this course many times before.

Pick 6-1-3-7

Race 14 - Grade D - 583  yards - I like the (1) Par Demander to be the key in this race as he is coming off a big nine and a half length win last time out and with his good early rush and strong closing run I think he gets it done here. The (9) Odd Zac is back to the short course after three races over a distance course and does have a recent win in this grade from the same nine box he starts from tonight. The (2) Backwood Amy shows a decent rush to the turn and I will also use the (6) Eye Pleasing as he has six top four finishes in eight races.

Pick 1-9-2-6

Race 18 - Grade AA - 703 yards - Another tough field of talented greyhounds but the pick here is the (3) Magic Evo who is going for her fourth win in her last six races over this distance. She won't have it easy as the (4) Gigawatt is trying to make it two straight wins and who is also the 2014 Razorback Champ (660 yard course). He won't be among the leaders early but with strong come from behind racing style, he will be flying at the end. The (7) Flying War Wager has adjusted well to the Southland track after coming here from Naples and has four wins in six races to show for it. I will include her as well as the (2) RCK Go For Jen who likes the inside to complete the ticket.

Pick 3-4-7-2

The Moneymaker play of the night is in the 1st race, a grade TD contest over the 660 yard course and the pick here will be the (5) Greenisle King. This is a greyhound that was running overseas at the Ireland greyhound tracks before coming to Southland and though he has had a tough time since arriving here I believe his last race is an indication he is getting close to a win. He held the lead  for a good part of the race so I will give him a shot here even though he faded down the stretch to finish fourth.
