Tonight's program of 18 exciting races is highlighted by the 4th round of the 2014 Southland Derby. The field has been narrowed down to 32 greyhounds and with the four stakes races tonight it will be reduced even further. With that in mind, the picks tonight are all concentrated on these races. You will watch some of the best greyhounds running in the U.S. this evening and what a treat it will be. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 7 - Grade SAA - 583 yards - In the first of the Southland Derby contests, I am going with the (4) CBJ Butterfinger as the key. This greyhound has 18 quiniela finishes including 11 wins in 29 races this season and already has a win and a third place finish in this stakes series and with his good rush and mid-track running style the one to beat here. Also getting a strong look will be the (8) Magic Garrett who is posted well since he likes it mid to wide and with his decent rush and good closing ability can't be overlooked. Finishing the tri and superfecta plays I will use the late running (1) Dexter Ambigram and the early speed (2) FF Code Red.

Pick 4-8-1-2

Race 9 - Grade SAA - 583 yards - Here I'm going with the (6) CBJ Old Glory as the one to beat. This young greyhound has 10 top three finishes in 12 races which includes a win, a 2nd and a 3rd place finish in the first three rounds of this stakes challenge. He is running extremely hard and I like him to continue his hot streak with a big run tonight. The (2) Stilgar will have plenty to say himself as he has two wins and a 2nd place effort so far in this stakes contest and with a nice rush to the turn should be in the chase again. I will include the (8) Bold Deceiver who likes it mid track and the (1) Mega Vast who likes the inside.

Pick 6-2-8-1

Race 11 - Grade SAA - 583 yards - The one to beat here in my opinion is the (1) Branding Iron who loves the inside and who has two wins and a 2nd place effort in the first three rounds of the Southland Derby challenge. This young and very talented greyhound also made the finals of the recent Razorback distance stakes just a few weeks back and it shows he can run either course with the same winning results. The (8) HL's Travis will make it tough however and his wide running style along with his early burst out of the box is enough for me to include him as another possible winner. I can't leave out either the (5) Topline Drive or the (4) Kebo Bellagio as both are capable should early trouble develop among the leaders.

Pick 1-8-5-4

Race 13 - Grade SAA - 583 yards - The highlight race of the card is the final stakes contest of the evening and talk about a tough call, half the field is worthy of being selected for the 2014 All-American greyhound team. This race will feature some of the best greyhounds in the U.S. and I'm going with the (1) Kiowa Producer to lead them across the finish line. He is undefeated in this Southland Derby and is looking to stay that way and make it four straight wins. Going paw to paw with him is the fabulous (3) Flying Titanium who is going for his fifth win in his last six races and most certainly a threat to win as well. The (5) Atascocita Gray has a win, a 2nd and a 3rd place finish in this stakes contest and all three of these outstanding greyhounds have been the betting favorite in each of their last six races. To show you just how incredibly tough this field is, I will use the (4) U Too Pure Silk to complete the ticket and to those of you who may not know it, he was a member of the 2013 All-American greyhound team and a former stakes winner himself.

Pick 1-3-5-4

The evening's Moneymaker play is in the 12th race, a grade D contest over the 583 yard course and is the (5) CBJ Liberty.
