Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/19/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
Saturday evening at the Southland track and we have 18 exciting races on the card in which to watch the greyhounds show their talents. I have concentrated the picks on the 583 yard course and have listed those selections below that I believe offer good wagering opportunities.
Race 4 - Grade D - 583 yard course - I'm going with the (4) SE's Charlie as the key in this one. He is coming off a very impressive 10 and 1/2 length win in his last contest and I'm looking for him to run another nice race here. He likes it mid-track so with his early speed and nice rush he should be the one to beat. The (3) Craigie Shoney also has good early speed so he may be vying for the lead as they hit the turn. The class of the race is the (1) Arkans Bd Brutus and he has a ton of late speed and should be flying down the stretch. Completing the play I will include the (7) Thunderin Clark who also shows some closing ability.
Picks: 4 - 3 - 1 - 7
Race 5 - Grade M - 583 yard course - I had the (4) Kiowa Dot DJ as the key last time out and and he ran into trouble though he still finished third so I'm coming right back with him again. He will looking for the lead early and if he gets it, he's going to be tough to run down. The (5) PJ Bright Flash also has good early speed so these two should battle for the front right out of the box. The (2) Ansel comes out fast as well but has faded down the stretch in his last two races but he may hang on here so I'm using him as well as the (6) Slatex Waveen who has five top four finishes in six races.
Picks: 4 - 5 - 2 - 6
Race 16 - Grade AA - 583 yard course - A very competitive field in this contest but I like the (5) U Too Pure Silk as the key. This talented greyhound has fifteen top two finishes in 27 starts including 10 wins this season and should be out fast and contending for the win here as well. I do like the (2) Flyin Supergiant but with his mid to wide running style, he needs a fast start to clear early and get running room outside. A greyhound that can surprise the field is the (8) CBJ Treat as he won from this same eight box last time he had it. Finishing the play I'll use the rail running (7) WW's Grover in case he clears.
Picks: 5 - 2 - 8 - 7
Race 17 - Grade A - 583 yard course - Going with the (8) Smokey Joe as the key in this one as with his good early speed he should find running room right out of the box and be the one to catch. I like the (3) Flying Shaded to avoid early trouble and be close enough down the stretch to make a late bid at the end. The (1) Kiowa Red Dawn won last time out and is trying to make it two straight wins from the one box. I will include the (7) PJ Payingthebill in case there is trouble among the early leaders as has a mid to wide running style and worth a play on tri and superfecta tickets.
Picks: 8 - 3 - 1 - 7
The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 14th race, a grade D race over the 583 yard course and is the (9) CBJ Liberty. He has nine top four finishes in fifteen races and has a very good rush which should put him in good position to challenge for the win. He had the nine box last time out and just missed getting the lead so I'll give him another shot here.
