Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/2/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
This evening's Southland card has a full slate of 18 always exciting and entertaining races and which is highlighted by the 2014 Southland Derby Championship winner Atascocita Gray going for his fourth straight win after his impressive victory last week in the above stakes final. I have included that race in the picks as well as a few others that stood out to me. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.
Race 3 - Grade M - 583 yard course - The pick here is the (8) Vanzant to win a close one. This greyhound has finished second in all three of his schooling races and with his good rush I think he wins in his first official race this evening. Another young pup that should be in the chase to the wire is the (5) Famous Jameis who already has three second place finishes in his young career of five starts. These two should go paw to paw for the win. I will also use the (6) PJ Confession as she shows potential and she does have a wide running style. Finishing the ticket I will include the (1) Windy Rio as she ran a strong third from this same one box last time out.
Picks: 8 - 5 - 6 - 1
Race 4 - Grade A - 583 yard course - I am going with the (6) Dexter Ambigram to come from behind and win it at the wire in a photo finish. This is a hard running greyhound who did make the Southland Derby Consolation final. In that race he was bumped at the break which took him out of the race right out of the box. I don't see that happening here so he's my key here. The (2) Mega Toucan is also capable of getting the win as he likes the inside and his last two wins have come from the one and two boxes. The (3) Bumblebee Drive likes it mid to wide and if she can get by the first turn in decent shape I wouldn't be surprised to see her in the money as well. The (7) RC Abovetherest is coming off a win so I'll put him on the ticket in case he steals the early lead.
Picks: 6 - 2 - 3 - 7
Race 5 - Grade AA - 583 yard course - The (4) Atascocita Gray is going for his fourth straight win not to mention the fact that he just won the 2014 Southland Derby Championship in his last race. This proven stakes winner is the one to beat as he likes it mid-track and has a big, big rush which should have him in the lead early here. The (3) Stilgar ran a nice fourth in that Derby final and could improve on that finish in this race. The late closing (5) Topline Drive will be flying down the stretch and the (6) Beryl Drumm who is also a nice closer and who is posted well for his wide running style will complete the ticket.
Picks: 4 - 3 - 5 - 6
Race 18 - Grade TAA - 820 yard course - Here we have the always exciting super marathon contest and the pick is the (8) Kiowa Groom. He is working his way back in form after being off for three months and is no stranger to this super distance course having won six straight and ten out of eleven super marathon races back in late 2013. I will use the (7) RC Holdingspride as he is going for his fourth straight win over this course as well as the (4) KL's Wanda as I like her early speed to put her among the frontrunners. I will also use the (1) GS Sidney who has a strong closing ability for tri and superfecta plays.
Picks: 8 - 7 - 4 - 1
The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the Grade B 2nd race over the 583 yard course and the choice is the (2) Slatex Athens. I like him because he has dropped in grade and with his inside running style, the two box should give him the edge he needs to avoid early trouble and hopefully clear the first turn in good shape.
