Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/24/2014

July 24th, 2014

This evening's card at Southland will feature 18 exciting races and among them are several top grade contests that caught my attention as I went thru the program. Grade A and up races are always filled with talented and competitive greyhounds but nowhere is that more true then at Southland. I've went with three top grade contests and a solid B grade race for Thursday's picks so let's get things started with a win.

Race 9 - Grade B - 583 yard course - I'm going with the (8) Slatex Daytona as the key in this one as she is going for her third win in her last four races, all while steadily moving up in grade. In fact, she has nine top four finishes in her very young career of only nine races. She has good early speed and also a strong closing ability so the one to beat here. The (2) Track Dynasty likes the inside and the (6) Ericka Of Ruckus likes it mid-track and is capable of hitting the lid as she does have the class to be in contention at the wire. To finish the play I'll use the (7) Juggernaut who came to Southland from the Palm Beach track where he had 13 wins in 25 races.

Picks: 8-2-6-7

Race 11 - Grade AA - 583 yard course - The key here is the (1) CBJ Twix who is a solid top grade runner who has two wins this season from the one box in this same grade. He has 29 top four finishes in 36 races and with that consistency along with a strong rush to the turn, he's the one to beat. The (8) CR Joe is going for his third straight win and won from the eight box just two races ago. I also like the (4) WW's Grover as he will be vying for the front right out of the box and could be the early leader. I'll include the (2) Flying Riot as he has two wins out of his last three races.

Picks: 1-6-4-2

Race 15 - Grade TAA - 660 yard course - A tough and competitive field in this one but the pick is the (3) Smokey Joe who is coming off a win last time out over this course. Runs hard and has tons of early speed, will be battling for the front right out of the box. The (8) Bart's Hammerdown is well posted for his mid to wide running style and should avoid the trouble he has been running into lately to make a challenge down the stretch. I will use the (2) Gigawatt because of his strong late closing move and the (5) RCK Amazon who has good early speed to finish the ticket.

Picks: 3-8-2-5

Race 18 - Grade AA - 660 yard course - The (1) State Of Art gets the nod as the key in this one as he has two wins and two second place efforts in his last six races, all of which are over this distance. The (4) Flying Shotgun has been running hard as evidenced by his last three races in which he has a win and two second place finishes. He will be challenging for the lead early so can't overlook him here. The (3) Gusta Of Ruckus also has some early speed and it wouldn't surprise me to see her among the frontrunners out of the box. The (5) Klassickle likes it mid-track and shows both early and late speed, will include him as if there is any trouble among the leaders he will be a factor at the end.

Picks: 1-4-3-5

The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 14th race, a grade D contest over the 660 yard course and is the (5) Flying Tigerbaby. She has never gone this longer distance but she does have four top four finishes in her young career of eight races. She also shows some early speed as well as a late closing move and since she has been bumped in her last two races, she could easily be the surprise of the evening if she can get clear early. I'll give her a shot here as the odds should be good on her.
