Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/3/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
The holiday weekend is upon us and Southland has 18 exciting races on the card for this evening so let's get it started with a bang. The card is highlighted by a couple of races that include several of the greyhounds who make the finals of the recent 2014 Southland Derby Championship. I have included these races in the picks below. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.
Race 3 - Grade M - 583 yards - Going with the (8) PJ Superior as the key here. He has five top four finishes in five races so far in his young career and he likes it mid to wide and with his good rush should be in good shape early to contend for the win. The (1) Kiowa Andy Allen is also a threat for the win as he has already had six second place finishes in just nine races and with his early speed should be vying for the lead right out of the box. Finishing the ticket I'll use the (5) Trackinfo Time and the (2) R Johnny Be Good as both of them could benefit if the early leaders have any trouble.
Pick 8-1-5-2
Race 5 - Grade A - 583 yards - The pick here is the (8) Heyl who gives 110% each time out. He is well posted here with his mid to wide running style and who will be closing fast down the stretch. The (1) Mega Catamaran has early speed and loves the inside as does the (2) TF Tommy Salami so I will use both of them on the ticket since they will be vying for the front right out of the box and if there is any trouble behind them, either one could steal the win. The (5) WW's Sparks Flying will complete the tri and superfecta plays as she is dropping in class.
Pick 8-1-2-5
Race 7 - Grade AA - 583 yards - A very competitive field in this contest but I'm going with the very talented (7) Flying Titanium to get back on the winning track after finishing a strong second in the recent 2014 Southland Derby Championship final. He is going after his fourth win in his last seven races and I believe he gets it. The (8) HL's Travis is capable of a big run himself and he does like it mid to wide so he is posted well in this contest. Completing the ticket I will use the (3) Flying Welsh who likes the inside and the (5) CBJ Old Glory who also make the finals of the Southland Derby.
Pick 7-8-3-5
Race 11 - Grade AA - 583 yards - It's a close call in this one as I like both the (5) Kiowa Oriole and the (6) U Too Pure Silk as the ones to beat but I'll take Kiowa Oriole to win in a photo. Both of these greyhounds ran well in the recent 2014 Southland Derby and Kiowa Oriole did run third in the championship final. The (7) Volando Dilbert has tons of early speed and the (1) Flying Rainmaker is capable of coming from behind so I'll include both of them to finish out the play.
Pick 5-6-7-1
This evening's Moneymaker play is in the Grade C race 8 over the 583 yard course and is the (3) Mr. Shillielagh. This young greyhound started his career with two schooling wins and then came right back with two straight wins in his first two official races before having a fourth and sixth place finish in his last two outings. I look for him to get back on a winning note in this one.
