Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/4/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
I hope everyone is enjoying this 4th of July holiday and with 20 races on the card for this evening's Southland greyhound racing there is sure to be fireworks galore. There are some very appealing races that caught my attention so let's see if we can put some cash in our pockets as we get the weekend started. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.
Race 1 - Grade D - 583 yard course - The pick here is the (2) Border Campaign. All this young and talented greyhound has done so far is win all three of his schooling races as well as his first official race in which he won by ten lengths. I'm going with him to continue his unbeaten streak here. The (6) Flying Tigerlady should be in great shape early with her strong rush and the (8) Nyari is posted well with her outside running style so I will include both of them as well as the rail running (1) CBJ Casper.
Pick 2-6-8-1
Race 7 - Grade M - 583 yard course - In this maiden contest I'm going with the (8) Quirky Horatio to win a close one as he barely lost last time out, beaten by a nose at the wire. He is a wide runner and has shown both good early speed as well as a nice closing run so he's the key here. Another one that bears watching is the (7) PJ Gotochurch. She has encountered trouble the last two times out but before that, she had three straight second place finishes in two schooling races and one official race so she is capable of a big run and it may be here. Finishing the tri and superfecta plays I will use the early speed (5) Mojoe Atlas and the late closing (3) PJ Absinthe.
Pick 8-7-5-3
Race 9 - Grade A - 583 yard course - The rail running (2) WW's Grover gets the nod in this one as I believe he outrushes the dogs on either side of him and gets the coveted inside position in which to make his run. The (3) CBJ Irish Cream will also be vying for the early lead and trying to get outside for his mid to wide running style. I will overlook the past few races of the (4) Aqib Talib as he has stumbled, been bumped and blocked in those contests but the last time he had the four box in this grade, he won going away. To complete the play, I will use the wide running (6) How Cool Is That.
Pick 2-3-4-6
Race 18 - Grade SAA - 820 yard course - In this super marathon contest I'm going with the (7) Flying Smoky as the key. Last time out he almost went box to wire but finished second after being caught in the stretch. He does have a win and three second place efforts in his last six races over this course. Going paw to paw with him right out of the box will be the (1) Kiowa Tree White who loves the rail and has the early speed and the post position edge to do so. The (3) Marble Arch and the (4) AJN Lebron James both are worth considering for tri and superfecta plays.
Pick 7-1-3-4
The Moneymaker pick of the evening is in the 5th race, a grade B contest over the 583 yard course and is the (1) Bella Atlas. This is his second race in B grade after dropping in class and he did have two third place finishes in A grade just a few races back. He likes the inside and he does have three wins from the one box here at Southland so I'm willing to give him a shot at pulling the upset.
