Hare's Five to Show for Rosehill Group 1 Quintet
For this promo, we place a single $5 Show wager on a horse in any race on the designated card, and all players who cash a winning $5 Show wager on at least five separate races on the designated card will split $1,000 with all other winners.
The designated card on Friday night (for those of us in the States) is Rosehill (Australia A), which features five Group 1 stakes races for which we’ll place our five Show bets.
Rosehill Race 4 -- Group 1 Ranvet Stakes
A small, but classy field of seven lines up for the first Group 1 of the card, which is contested over 2000m. Defending champion Silent Achiever shows up here in what will be her third start this preparation after having ran respectably in the Apollo and Chipping Norton, both of which were over distances a bit short for her liking. Nevertheless, she appears to have built up nicely to this event. She has one win and a third in three tries at this course and distance and is one who typically gets better as the season progresses. Contributer may be the one to beat, but Silent Achiever was only 1.3 lengths behind him last time out after being 2.7 lengths behind him in her first-up appearance, so any further improvement should see her go close.
Rosehill Race 5 -- Group 1 Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas
This one features another field of only seven, but given how the three-year-olds have gone so far this autumn there look to be several in here that merit watching not only today, but going forward. Hallowed Crown has won both of his starts this year, but he’s stepping up to 2000m for the first time. His pedigree is light on stamina influences, however, so despite him being the class of the field, we’ll side with Mongolian Khan -- the New Zealand Derby winner who has won six from seven starts. He’s rarely been challenged in his career and although this is a clear step up in class, a smaller field deprived of much early speed should provide him the perfect setup.
Rosehill Race 6 -- Group 1 Canadian Club Galaxy
Deep Field and Miracles of Life enter here sporting the strongest form of the race, but wide draws over a course that features a short run to the hairpin turn severely compromises their chances. We’ll look to trip notes horse Rubick who was third to Miracles of Life when first-up in the Challenge Stakes despite being boxed in for most of the straight and having to re-rally after forcing his way around horses. He’s won one of two second-up starts, as well as his only start over this 1100m distance. With a good draw, suitable pace scenario, and being better off in the weights compared to Miracles of Life in his favor, he looks capable of a strong run.
Rosehill Race 7 -- Group 1 Tooheys New Golden Slipper
Vancouver flew in his lead-ups. He looked a likely deserved short price favorite and every bit a star coming into the Golden Slipper, but a disastrous outside draw makes him worth siding against. The leading colts have ran quicker times than their filly counterparts in the lead-ups, so we’ll side with Lonhro colt Exosphere, who represents one of four chances for John O’Shea and Godolphin. Exosphere caught my eye in a big way when breaking his maiden by over four lengths at Kembla Grange in February -- a race from which two horses have won since, including Black Opal Stakes winner Takedown -- and he backed that up with a four length trouncing of the field in the Skyline Stakes. Progressive filly English, who won a proven Slipper prep race in the Reisling Stakes, represents the value, but since we’re looking to cash show wagers, we’ll go with the more proven prospect in Exosphere for these purposes.
Rosehill Race 8 -- Group 1 George Ryder Stakes
The fifth and final Group 1 race on the card features a classy field of 14 going 1500m. It’s an intriguing race in that in addition to the local gallopers, we have newcomer It’s Somewhat, who impressed when clearly winning the Liverpool City Cup in his Australian debut, as well as Japanese raiders Real Impact and World Ace, the latter of which sports some seriously strong form. A winner of four from 12 starts, World Ace’s most recent win came last April in the Group 2 Milers Cup and he followed that up with a fifth place finish in the G1 Yasuda Kinen -- only 3.7 lengths behind the duo of Just A Way and Grand Prix Boss, who flattered that form when third in the Group One Hong Kong Mile. Speaking of the Hong Kong Mile, World Ace himself ran just behind his countryman in fourth there, five lengths behind superstar Able Friend and only ¾ lengths behind runner-up Gold-Fun, who has since won a Hong Kong Group 1. Japanese horses typically go well in Australia and more importantly, this race has been part of a planned campaign for quite some time. So long as he can get out of the gate without trouble, as that can be an issue for him, he should be in the mix late.
