Harness Players’ Horse Of The Year Leads Long List Of ‘Profit Ponies’ For 2016

Each year the TwinSpires harness department looks into the 12-month archives of suggested contenders posted in the exclusive weekly harness blog. We categorize all of the winners that have paid at least two digits (4-1 and up) in the order of win prices high to low (while including their place and show prices). We have a separate list for our winners of specific stakes we featured.

One horse is missing, however. That is the TwinSpires Harness Players’ Horse of The Year. This horse stands alone as it is the highest paying winner from our 50-some-odd posts of the year.

There were many more winners posted during the year, paying 7-2 and lower but for the sake of space and a braggart’s love for success, we present only two-digit winners. Players’ Best Payer

The biggest win mutual for a TwinSpires harness blog selection in 2016 was the price for That’s The Ticket. On Aug. 27 at Mohawk Raceway, the two-year-old filly won a $35,000 elimination mile for the She’s A Great Lady stakes at $58.50-1. With no show betting, due to a heavy favorite that finished out  of the money, That’s The Ticket paid $119.00 to win and $50.20 to place. The race was a feature in our blog that week.

That’s The Ticket is the TwinSpires Harness Players’ Horse of the Year for 2016.

That’s The Ticket is a daughter of Roll With Joe, a sire that produced many winners this season (a lot of them suggested by our texts). She is out of the Artsplace mare Art Account. Chris Ryder is her trainer, C.W. Henderson and R.A. Mondillo are her owners and L.S. Minowitz bred her. Sylvain Fillion drove her in our landmark race.

There is one caveat to the crowning of our the TwinSpires Harness Players’ Horse of The Year. On Sept. 17, in the $436,000 Elegantimage Final at Mohawk, the winner, Royal Charm, missed getting the honor by $51.50. However, Royal Charm paid more to place than That’s The Ticket paid to win. Royal Charm paid $122.20 to place and that deserves an honorable mention to this year’s champion win price.

Congratulations to the industry’s Horse of the Year, Always B Miki. We were behind this guy strongly when he was a sophomore. We argued he was more accomplished and would ultimately accomplish far more than that year’s sophomore winner and we chose him to win many races at three and four, sometimes offering better prices than he would as he improved even more, which he did. Eventually, Always B Mike became the fastest harness horse in history, winning in 1:46. Congratulations to all of the connections.
