Harness Preview: Picks and Horses to Watch May 18-22

TwinSpires Staff

May 17th, 2023

Selected features, stakes coverage and the never-ending TwinSpires’ horses-to-watch list (H2W) share keys to success in exotics, win, place and show payoffs.

Thursday, May 18

Each week, we highlight probable longshots from Mohawk Park (WoMo) in this features section. If they do not win at first crack, we add them to the H2W the following week as a bet-back while adding new possibilities to this Mohawk Miles section.

Race 1—My One Percent; Super qualifier prepped for a win here.
Race 2—Deadly Delight; A refund from early break, go with ‘em again.
Race 4—Moonlit Affair; Late rush at 10-1 was good enough.

Hoosier / Races 11, 12, 13, 14

Hit the late Pick-4 at Hoosier Park on Thursday and split the $1,000 daily jackpot.
Here are our contenders for the Pick 4. We feel they help exotic payoffs so consider them when building a Pick 4 ticket, as well as for single-race bets.

Race 11

Little Jolena’s awful trip does not represent her best and cannot be denied as the most likely winner here, though obvious. Alwaysanun is dangerous racing as she did three back.

Race 12

Juxta Cowgirl qualified well and faces far less competition than she had racing with better in the east. Bettor Lady races best at this level.

Race 13

Momentstruth is a bet back from last week’s P-4, finishing fourth within a close quartet. Morning Sunrise dips a notch after handling better.

Race 14

Ponda Executive’s recent qualifier was a win faster than any of his foes traveled a mile in actual races. A classic automatic play.

Race 7

This lone feature presents single-race exotics and a parlay worth the look using Tellitsabb. Claimed three back, brought the bettors to him at this level, and he did his best for the new connections last week in a three-way photo for second. He’ll be revving up for a good mile. Watch the betting for second- and third-choice partners for exotics.

Race 9

DP Nite Ranger may only have to overcome the 8 hole start to make a major impression on this maiden field. His journeys from the outside have been good to hit the board, and the public was with him. They may dismiss him here, making it all the more important to consider him a contender in every wager.

The $155K Arthur Cutler Memorial is a free-for-all for older trotters, and 11 of them are set for the battle for the bulk of the purse.

A few trainers have more than one involved, but only trot-king Marcus Melander has one, and that one presents a 2023 debut in this big-money mile. Venerate, at his best stride, is as good as most of the best here and better than the rest.

Ake Svanstedt sends three, Ron Burke two, and Jeff Cullipher sends the top money-winner this season. Any one of these can get the best trip and win but value-wise, it may be best to take a leap of faith with talent and experience intact and go with Melander’s monster of a trotter.
