Harrington kicks off spring meet on Monday
Roughly ten days after the Dover Downs harness meet ended, Harrington Raceway will kick off its spring meet on Monday evening with a solid 12-race card.
Monday's opening race is a competitive non-winners of three races of $15,000 lifetime event for pacers on which the top two contenders are polar opposites of one another.
Numerouno Hanover will start from post six following a third-place finish as the 2-5 favorite in a similar event at Dover. Doctor McSwing will start alongside him in post seven and exits the same Dover race where he finished second, but arrives winless in 73 lifetime tries.
One race later the second half of the daily double appears considerably less difficult to predict. Captive Audience drew the rail in this non-winners of $7501 last four event. Captive Audience has been accustomed to facing much tougher at Dover and has the coveted rail while getting considerable class relief.
Then there races later on the card, rail bound Star Messenger (Victor Kirby) will seek his third straight victory in the other half of the non-winners of $7501 last four class. Feel Like A Fool (Pat Berry) is winless in 13 starts this year and will start from post seven, but he has been facing much tougher at Dover and could find the winner's circle here.
Then one race later in the $15,000 Open, a field of six will clash in the opening night feature.
Special T Rocks has the rail, Just A Jolt will leave from post two having won his most recent outing at Dover in 1:49.3. Bad Boy Matt has won four of 13 starts and banked over $80,000 this year and faced Open foes at Yonkers and Dover. Sparky Mark won his most recent outing at Rosecroft in 1:49.4. Vapour N has won twice since arriving from New Zealand along with Levy final hero Bit Of A Legend N.
Two races later in a non-winners of four lifetime event, Byby Landon and Fighttothefinish both prevailed in similar events at Dover in 1:52.4 and 1:53.2, respectively, and should finish one-two in this affair.
Then one race later in a non-winners of $50,001 lifetime class, railbound Western Young Gun seeks his second straight score for trainer-driver George Dennis and owner Forrest Bartlett of Forrest Skipper fame. Western Young Gun has won twice in 12 starts this year, but has plenty to do to match the feats of Forrest Skipper, the harness horse of the year in 1986 when he won all 16 of his starts for trainer-driver Lucien Fontaine.
Monday is the first night of the racing season at Harrington, with the Governors Day card in late July and the Bobby Quillen Memorial Invitational set for September. The Quillen should likely include reigning horse of the year Wiggle It Jiggleit and recent Levy hero Bit Of A Legend N, who dead-heated for first in 1:51.2 at Yonkers two weeks ago.
