October 25th, 2015

We begin our review with the end of the Breeders Crown program at Woodbine on Oct. 24 where the final race of the night was theonly non-Breeders Crown event. In Race 13, a conditioned pace, there was a mandatory pay off for the Super Hi-5 with an accumulated pool of around $2 million. Our department managed the Players Pool for the event, the participation capped at $15,000.

We hit with three 20-cent tickets, each worth $12,746 (return of $38,239.80 for participants. Here are the results and order of finish of that race for the Hi-5.

(6) Grin For Money, $54.00, $20.20, $12.10
(1) Crafty Master, $10.70, $5.30
(3) Hunch Man, $8.40
(2) Topcornerterror
(12) Velocity Driven

Congratulations to all the players making up the pool.

Expectations for strong-priced winners in the “Crown” races were low, as we checked in with outsiders for upsets but suggested the usual win/place/show routes and for them to also accompany top choices for exotics. The beginning of the evening’s championship affairs was only as good as the huge favorites we mentioned. Here are all the results concerning our suggestions in order of the races on the program.

D One ($2.90, $2.50, $2.10) won the Mare Trot as the public choice while our contender Rockin With Dewey (51-1) was sixth.

Pure Country ($2.30, $2.10, $2.10 ok) won the frosh-filly pace as the top choice. Our contender, Skinny Dipper (172-1) finished seventh.

Huge public choice Southwind Frank ($2.20, $2.10, $2.10) won the frosh-colt trot. Our choice, Lagerfeld (13-1) broke at the start and galloped home to finish last.

Divine Caroline ($3.30, $2.80, $2.30) in the soph-filly pace was the next favorite to win as our contender, Mosquito Blue Chip (12-1) managed to finish fourth to be a part of the superfecta.

Another crowd favorite (not chosen by us), All The Time, won the frosh-filly trot as our co-favorite choices Haughty ($3.10, $2.20) was second and Caprice Hill ($2.20) was third to complete the triactor with the favorite ($29.30) and our upset choice, Womans Will (20-1) was fourth to complete the superfecta ($60.20).

When super-favorite Mission Brief broke in the stretch while on target for a win as the big choice, all we could do is muster up a fourth with Classical Annie (116-1).

In the frosh-colt pace our top contender, Spider Man Hanover (22-1) finished seventh but we were second with the horse we chose to partner with him in the exactor, Big Top Hanover ($25.20, $14.30). Boston Red Rocks was the surprise winner as public-choice Control The Moment burned in the flaming three-quarters’ fractions.

Things became a bit better in the soph-colt trot. Pinkman ($2.20, $2.10) was beaten by stable-mate In The Bank. We had the third finisher, Muscle Diamond ($3.60).

Betting-public standout Freaky Feet Pete ($4.70, $2.90, $2.80) won over Artspeak ($3.20, $2.90) for an exactor of $13.70. Our third choice, In The Arsenal (31-1) was 10th at the finish line.

The Mare Pace was our best hit, as Colors A Virgin ($15.00, $6.50, $4.60), one of the two we listed, got the photo over our other choice, Sandbetweenurtoes ($7.10, $3.50) for an exactor worth $82.60).

The older trotters behaved more as we chose, with favorite Bee A Magician off the board, supplement Creatine (5-2) the winner and our choice, Resolve ($3.20, $3.00), second.

Always B Miki ($2.80, $2.30, $2.10) was the public standout, as we figured, with our contender Jk Endofanera ($4.00, $3.00) second in the $8.70 exactor.

H2W LIST RESULTS

The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Also, exactas listed are included when a H2W horse finishes second with a race favorite or the first two finishers making up the exacta are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses were listed to complete the exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices published are correct even when a show price exceeds a place price or any or all of the prices are the same. This week, there were 43 active horses (a 9-percent win hit rate and a 40-percent in-the-money hit rate). One note: the list included three horses at Batavia that at the time we thought would be betting races; they turned out to be non-betting races.

Please note that some H2W results reflect win, place and/or show results occurring after press time and that it is up to you to follow those horses that have not performed before this weekly review is posted.

News & Notes

Wiggle It Jiggleit may be the best soph-colt pacer of the season but he co-starred on Breeders Crown weekend in a lackluster mile at Hoosier on Oct. 23. In the $45,000 Circle City Stakes for his division, he won in 1:49.4. There were 10 others in the field, including unmemorable sophs such as Mohawk Warrior (second at 31-1), Ima Full Time Job (third at 117-1); Skim The Top, Major Ed and others that have not faced anything near the talent “Wiggle” has shown this year.

Harrington Raceway’s current season is over and Dover Downs’ schedule is poised to begin. Most of the top sophomore pacers are expected in the Matrons and the track’s signature event, the Hap Hansen Progress Pace. The track’s six-month campaign begins on Monday, Nov. 2 and ends on Thursday, April 9. During the first week of the meet, all four two-year-old divisions of the Matrons will be featured with lucrative finals on Thursday, Nov. 5. The following Thursday, Nov. 12, the standout three-year-olds will vie in four Matron finals for trotters and pacers.

The recently renamed $350,000 (estimated) Hap Hansen Progress Pace on Nov. 30, preceded on Nov. 23 with $35,000 elimination divisions, headlines by the sports outstanding three-year-old pacers, caps the “Novemberfest of Stakes.” During November, the freshman division of the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) is again part of Novemberfest. The DSBF colt and filly pacers and trotters race in two preliminary legs with the eight point-getters meeting in $100,000 finals.

In November and December, Dover will race a four-day schedule Monday through Thursday with post time at 4:30 p.m. There will be no live racing on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Sunday racing will be added in January and February. During March and April, the meet will continue until closing day, Thursday, April 9, 2016.
