Tim has spot plays Wednesday for Tampa, Lone Star, Canterbury, and Evangeline.
Tampa Bay Downs
Race 2
Trainer Potts has been winning with a high 37% of his first-time starters and saddles #5 Forrest Cat (7-2), a debuting son of 17% first-out sire Twirling Candy, who is out of a mare by Storm Cat whose offspring also won 17% of their debuts. Gelding is a half-brother to five winners and has been working forwardly for Potts, who wins with 21% of his runners overall in maiden claiming events. Bay appears ready for a good first outing under Villa-Gomez, who has won with 15% of his mounts for the barn in the last 60 days.
Lone Star Park
Race 7
#5 Awesome Saturday (12-1) closed to narrowly miss when second at this distance at Oaklawn last out in April. Son of Any Given Saturday finished a close third in the Commonwealth (G3) at Keeneland earlier in his career and makes his fourth outing for trainer Asmussen, who wins with 19% of his runners that have not raced for 46-90 days. Gelding should find just enough pace to close into with Stewart in the irons.
Canterbury Park
Race 1
Newcomer #9 Kennedy’s Day (6-1) is by young sire Race Day, whose offspring have won 15% of their first outings, and the firster is out of a stakes-winning mare who has produced one winner. Recent works include a solid 4-furlong move in :48 2/5 from the gate for trainer Berndt, who wins with 27% of his runners in maiden claiming events. Filly may be ready to win the opener with Velazquez riding.
Race 5
Another first-time starter from the Berndt barn is #5 Temujin Lady (10-1), who likely worked alongside her stablemate 10 days ago. Filly has a decent win-early pedigree being by 12% first-out sire Warrior’s Reward and Berndt has won with 26% of his starters since the beginning of the year. Trainer Padilla wins with 10% of his newcomers and saddles #7 Sober Peace (20-1) for her debut. Daughter of Stay Thirsty is a half-sister to two winners and works include a sharp 4-furlong move in :48 from the gate six days ago. Chestnut may provide value with Felix in the saddle.
Race 7
#2 Blue Dancer (5-2) has a good record of 7-5-0-0 over one mile and comes off a win at this distance at Will Rogers early last month. Trainer Raven has won with 23% of her runners this year and gelding is ranked first on BRIS Prime Power. Consistent dark bay has tactical speed and can be in good position throughout with Eikleberry retaining the mount.
Evangeline Downs
Race 9
Maidens going 6-furlongs include #5 Grillin (15-1), who debuts for trainer Landry, who already has a winner this meet and scores at 23% with first-time starters. Works appear moderate, but filly is out of a mare by 16% first-out sire Indian Charlie, who has produced three winners, and dark bay is worth a look with Melancon in the irons.
